How do I get into Web Design?

Is it a case of doing a course and then looking for jobs?

How do I get into Web Design?
Do yourself a favour man - just don't - the job market is oversaturated as it is with a dearth of very talented and capable people.

if you REALLY want to then buy books with tutorials or with stuff online, build your own websites, or go to small businesses and build some freebies - but kkeep in mind there's gonna be plenty of others doing exactly the same.

Telling you - go learn to be a plumber or something practical and actually useful.
Reply:Mostly. It took the program at a local community college and it took me about 2 years. If you are quick, you can learn alot of it yourself. Go to www.w3schools.com. You can learn alot from that site and there are alot of tutorials on the net.

There are two main skills that go into web design: graphic design and web development. Graphic design is the usual drawing of computer graphics and creating a pleasing layout that's easy to follow. Web development is writing HTML and CSS and following standards.

You can get courses in both of those. There are also online tutorials for HTML and CSS. Personally, I'd recommend finding a course that targets web design as a job (perhaps at a community college) to get started.

Once you feel like you have some skills and are ready to get work, create websites for people to build a portfolio. Do it for free if you need to, since people aren't generally willing to pay unless they can see examples of your work.
Reply:Yes, You need to finish the course off and than find a job.
