Any suggestions of how to quote for web / brochure / business card design services?

I'll be doing some freelance web design / brochure design and business card design very soon...

Can anyone recommend a pricing structure (excluding web hosting %26amp; registration) ....?

Ie - hourly rate as opposed to package deals...

With and without Flash components....

Search Engine Optimization...

Any suggestions for sites to check out for assistance with this..?

*** I would consider myself quite good at web DESIGN, but I wouldn't say expert A List Apart type material!!! ***

What do you think guys..?

Any suggestions of how to quote for web / brochure / business card design services?
What you want to do is figure out an average of how long it takes you to do a job. For that job you bid on how many hours it will take you based on your average. If you are bidding without competition then you want to bid based on a worst case scenario, at least if you are really good.

What if I have a website or internet business idea. But know nothing about web design or business.?

I have no webdesign or business skills. I just have a few ideas that I think might work. Where should I turn. I need a detailed response. so please be literal. I need a start to finish nothing left out response. Thankyou.

What if I have a website or internet business idea. But know nothing about web design or business.?
Your next step would be to get involved with a web host that will assist you in the designing/building of your website around your interests and ideas. There are a few great ones out there. I would suggest that you take a look at several options. First compare feature-by-feature then dollar-for-dollar. Doing this will ensure that you find the host that will fit your needs and get you the most out of your money. I personally enjoy the services of http://www.customized-by-you.com They have a great tutorial video on their site that explains the proper design/structure of a successful website.

BEST WISHES!
Reply:Time of execution is critical on the internet. Everybody is thinking of some awesome idea and is trying to be the new "Facebook or Youtube".

I would recommend to draw this idea out on paper. Since you don't know nothing about web design or the web design business I would suggest getting a NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) and go to some reputable website design companies, get it signed, see what's involved and how much it would cost to develop such application.

If you do have the funds let them develop it and you concentrate on the marketing site of things.
Reply:For website and web design:

Try CityMax or Site Builder Designs, they have everything you need in building your own website: domain name registration, web hosting, web builder, site maintenance and email accounts. Everything is laid out in an easy to follow step by step instruction. Some of the features included enable you to add your own themes, videos, images or mp3 music making your site unique to you. Pricing is comparable and affordable too.

For business you can start out by getting a business license or permit by simply going to your local government office, they can assist you with all your needs...business name, license, which taxes you need to collect and submit and so on. I own a home business, I have a business license and have websites...in the beginning it can be scary and overwhelming but it really isn't. If you ever need assistance filling out forms, taxes or anything just give your local government office a call, they are there to help you.

I truly hope that I was of some help and answered your question.
Reply:You're an entrepreneur and need to embrace the things that make for a successful entrepreneur.

Step 1: Surround yourself with people that are experts at the things you're not. for example, a good banker contact; a good attorney, etc.

Step 2: Write a description of the web-based business you envision and see what web designers can do for you. Advertise this opportunity on the 37 Signals Gig Board. It's $100 but you'll garner the wisdom of good developers.

It's likely there will be lots of clarification conversations, but at least you'll get an accurate overview of what the project will entail.

Good luck!
Reply:It's hard to answer your question without knowing what you are trying to accomplish. For instance, is this site going to need a database? The webdesign part is easy if you know what you are doing.

If you want, click on my name and shoot me an email and I can throw some ideas back and forth to you.

I tried to send an email back to no avail so I'm going to place it here instead.

Hi,

The first thing I would do is research your market. This may take a

little while but it needs to be done. I don't think you would want to

spend the countless hours and money to invest in something that has

already

been created with an oversaturate market.

The site will definitely need a good niche to be

successful in todays market. There is a lot of competition out there.

It

I will list some steps for you as follows:

Step 1: Research your market - Is this market oversaturate?

Step 2: You need a plan! Fail to plan, plan to fail! Write all of your

ideas on paper. I.E - How is the site going to work? What kind of

market are you targeting? How will you generate cash flow? Paid

advertising?

Will there be a monthly subscription fee?

Step 3: Start laying out some screens with software or on paper. I

would suggest doing your own screen layouts. You may not know any web

design but you should be able to layout the system for somebody to get

an

idea of what you want accomplished.

When you have ALL of the screens laid out and documented on their

functions you will need to start on a database design. If you don't

know how

to design a database I would go to Elance or rentacoder and try to

find somebody to get the database built. I would hand them ALL of the

screen mockups so they can design your database correctly on the

functionality you would like.

As far as the web design is concerned you could probably find a free

open source template to work off of. There are a couple of sites with

free web templates you could use.

http://www.oswd.org/

http://www.openwebdesign.org/

And of course when everything is completed and ready to be rolled out

you will need to start an advertising campaign. You may need to adjust

your site for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). You could even write

E-Zines about your website and submit it to various tech sites hoping

it

will be published so millions of people can see!

Good luck!
Reply:I would recommend starting out with a website that is totally free and comes with free hosting. Zero cost to you. Comes with a building program that takes you step by step all the way. This is a super way to start and helps you learn the entire process. My site which is not quite finished, was developed from this same company. I ended upgrading with my site but you don't have to unless you desire to later on. Maybe in the future if you want to go big time. Just get the free site and work on it for awhile until you get experienced. You can work on it at your own pace. Hope this helps you out and best of luck. Just go to my site and remember I too started from scratch. www.websitebargainstore.com and click on the Information page. Best of luck!

What's the difference between web design and web development? What does a graphic designer do?

Web designers design webpages by using html

Web programmers program a webpage do do certain stuff with php, asp or jsp. For example, sites like Yahoo, Facebook and Google have a lot of other functions such as uploading and web programs (google docs)

It depends on the graphic designer he could be using vector gaphics, creating brochures, doing something in photoshop anything that has to do with images is a job of a graphic designer

What's the difference between web design and web development? What does a graphic designer do?
Web developing is program design. Web design is a graphic art - web designers are artists. (I can program anything the computer can do, but I can't design a straight line.)
Reply:Web design and web development are the same thing. A graphic designer designs graphics. Many times a graphic designer will design the look for a website and the programmer, (web designer) does the rest. A graphic designer can also do layouts for periodicals as well or just design logos's etc.

I've worked in the field for 10 years, a web designer and developer ARE one and the same.
Reply:Web Designer: The people who come up with cool looking designs and layouts for websites. They sometimes work with Graphic Designers to develop the images.

Web Developer: The people who code the backend of sites that run dynamic code using databases or AJAX, etc. This is much more in the line of programming than design.

Graphic Design: The people who make lots of pretty images that wow our minds when we see them. They work with Web Designers to help make the cool looking sites we love and enjoy.
Reply:as a web designer, I made great looking pages with the data and graphics provided

web developers made the mailboxes work, made the daily back ups of the servers, made payment software function, set up online chat rooms etc etc

one is 'front of the house' and the other is 'back of the house'
Reply:Well a graphic designer makes graphics, Like people who make myspace layouts. Web design is how settings, navigation, and stuff such as online purchases.

How good in demand is Web Design and/or Web developing?

How good in demand do front side web developers have as a job?

How good in demand is Web Design and/or Web developing?
It depends on the times. But most of the time a lot of big name companies are looking for qualified candidates.

Your best bet is to start with a smaller company and work your way up. My friend got hired on after graduating in the fall at $55,000 a year straight out of college.

How much should I charge for web design projects per hour?

Obviously it depends on the project, but what range should I go for? I do html, css, asp, javascript, flash animations, the works...just trying to get a going rate for my start-out business. Thanks!

How much should I charge for web design projects per hour?
A good friend of mine with 15 years in print and digital publishing charges $30/hour for graphics, lyout, and design. For coding dynamic pages in asp or complex javascript she charges $40. I would place the flash in the $40 category.

For myself as a web application developer, strctly sticking to Asp.Net I bill at $60/hour. I also have a minimum 8 hours for a new client.

With my existing clients that send alot of work my way and pay on time, I dont bill for less than 30 so if they need somethign fast and simple I just give it to them. Its a good way too make sure they want to come back to you.

You can look at sites like monster.com or computerjobs.com and get an idea of what the rates are in your area.
Reply:I would call your local career college or technical college and ask someone in their graphics design program.

The biggest variable is going to be your portfolio. Potential clients are going to want to see what you have done.
Reply:The more you charge, the better caliber client you get... try starting high (around 70 dollars and hour) and work you way down... I always seem to get the work at a higher price... people feel like they are getting a better programmer if they pay more.

The biggest mistakes in web design - what to avoid?

In your eyes, what are the top 5 biggest web design mistakes? What would definitely cause you to leave a website - and visit no more?

The biggest mistakes in web design - what to avoid?
1. Lagging load times - limit graphics and splice them up into smaller more easily downloadable formats.

2. Lack of professionalism in design - Sites that look tacky will drive my business elsewhere.
Reply:slow loading

outdated content

terrible design

spelling errors

pages that do not work
Reply:Ditto to all of those.. But I would add bad spelling and language in the content to the list. And those pages that are nothing but links all jumbled together. And Bad contrast between text and background color. And clueless Flash design.. I think you get my drift..

Here's a site that hit the nail on the head for me.

http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com
Reply:the loading time bad graphics and pop ups
Reply:1) Page load times

2) Cheesy graphics (clipart)

3) Sounds the user can't turn off

4) Animation just for the sake of animation

5) Poor navigation

Not necessarily in that order

Designers, how would you sever your relationship with a web design client?

Serious answers only please. I designed a website for and have revised and maintained the site for over 3 1/2 years for a client. I would like to give them "notice" to find someone else to take over. I'm terribly burned out on their site, I have other projects of my own I want to devote my time to, their site has grown so much they now need a database driven solution, and I simply want to cut down on the time I spend in front of my computer.

I assume I should send them a written letter, but how do I tactfully tell them to find someone else? (I've always found it difficult to say no.) What would YOU say?

Designers, how would you sever your relationship with a web design client?
Rather than doing it like a resignation, i'd suggest that you find them a replacement to take over your place. Outsource your work to another RELIABLE designer/developer. Leaving a project is not good for your portfolio and there are other ways you can tackle your problem rather than leaving them. You can gain more time by concentrating on the jobs that have high priority, and outsource the one's that you have difficulty maintaining. By outsourcing, you expand your network with other designers. Propose to your client that the maintainance of their site is going to cost a litlle more as they require a database. Draft out the cost and present it to them. If they are happy with the price, accept the project and outsource your work. Your profits might be little compared to when you were spearheading the project yourself. But look at in on the bright side. You not only keep the customer, but you manage to get more time for yourself to pursue your other projects. Hope my answer was helpful.
Reply:Hi

Joyaz,

i have the sam eproblem saying no, but in this case you must, unless you want to learn database backed web based application design, mysql and php.

I have the solution:

Get a quote form a relibale source to maintain it, and say to them that this person will do it, as you are overloaded, but it will be done, and ak them if thats ok!

So your a middle lady, and thats it!

You can still charge them, over time a rlelationship will build between them and this new person you have refered to them.

As has been the case between you and them initially.

good luck

Reply:just a letter like a 2 weeks notice you are leaving a job -- thank them for the opportunity etc and explain you are currently pursuing other paths and can't invest the time you feel is needed to keep them as a happy client. its always best to make it sound like its in their best interest to drop you. you definitely want to offer your services for a period of x amount of weeks so they can find a replacement. i would think 4 weeks would be more than enough though.

What should I charge for my web design?

I built a web site for my parents rental home (http://www.vacationnorrislake.com) and our neighbors want me to build them a site for their home now. What is a resonable price?

What should I charge for my web design?
Call a couple of professionals in your area and ask what they charge per hour. Then halve it. Tell your neighbors that they can have as many features as they want, but since you charge by the hour, each one will cost them. If you just copy and alter the one you did for your parents, and they supply the pictures, you should be able to knock it out in two hours or less. If they want something fancy, it could be a 12-hour project.

There are 151,000 hits in Google for [deerfield resort rental],and you don't come up in the first 50. You might consider

1) Adding description and keywords meta tags

2) Using %26lt;h1%26gt; at the top instead of embedding "Hasbrouk House" in the graphic

The site is awfully good for a high-school student; clean, clear, fast, straight-forward, no animated garbage. I would have used more active voice, but I'm an old English teacher.

Passive voice: "The following list of marinas and activities are provided to better help you plan your vacation. "

Active voice: "Here is list of marinas and activities to help you plan your vacation."

I would have made all the links blue and underlined on that page, too.

I would have spell-checked it:

"We will provide a gate pass for each of your %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; cehicles for display upon entrance to the neighborhood"

But, we all have days our minds fly ahead of our fingers. It is a very nice site.
Reply:It's a decent site, not complex, very simple design. . . I'd say around $50
Reply:Figure out how many hours it will take you to do the job, and make a bid accordingly, based on your expertise and experience, how much per hour is it worth? Take into account the complexity and the detail required. But make your bid based on what it will cost you to do it (time) OR do just a cost per page, say $25 bucks a page or so. Then just do it in the most efficient manner
Reply:I looked at it. its pretty basic and nothing out of this world.

We are talking about your parents who fed you all your life don't charge them.

your neighbor charge them $50 this is nothing out of this world worth $500
Reply:charge $200 for the whole site unless you're going to script it heavily and make ecommerce.

then for each pristine script and commerce.. just add $50 unless the commerce is fully functional then the price should go up.. secure servers and all that jazz.... but basic stuff like you have $200 is a good, very good price...

you could go up a wee more... but make sure things work right and the site is self sufficient.

I am looking to set up a website where people can pay to post pictures. What are the best web design sites?

Web design Site, low cost or free, e commererce

I am looking to set up a website where people can pay to post pictures. What are the best web design sites?
You need to learn web design, how to translate that desing into code; then get a web host and a domain name.

Since photos are big you'll need a lot of server space, and enough bandwidth. If people pay to use your site they will want their money back if they go to use their account and can't because you ran out of bandwith for the month.

There are already many sites that offer this service free of charge, go round a few and see what you can offer thats different. Try Photobucket, Pbase and Deviant Art to get an idea of whats out there, they all offer a different service.

As for web design and hosting yours won't be a straightforward design job and I'd suggest you see a web designer, some offer free consultations and they may be able to show you what you're letting yourself in for.

You also have legal issues such as copyright and other problems to take into account.

Check out www.1and1.co.uk for their web hosting services for an idea of cost.
Reply:thats a stupid idea... there are free websites that do that eg/ photobucket... duh!
Reply:Why would someone want to pay to post pictures, when its free elsewhere?

Need help with a project for my web page design class?

Yesterday our teacher from my web page design class made us partner up and gave us a project and some questions to go with that project. Basically the questions are multiple choice and we have to answer the questions and write down why we think thats the answer. Most of these questions well actually all of these questions we haven't even discussed or been taught in class. My partner that I was assigned and I we've been looking through our book and we can't even find the answers. Hopefully someone can help up us.

1. Which of the following is a crucial aspect to an effective design?

A. Extra words

B. Adjectives and adverbs

C. Attractive, eye-catching graphics

D. Small, unobtrusive lettering

Need help with a project for my web page design class?
For Question 1:

Well, lets go through what it isn't.

A. Extra words just make the reader have to read more, and this can be quite irritating, sometimes a reader just wants to come along, work around your site, and leave, if you use too many words, you may start to blabber on about nothing, and people may find that boring and forget about your website.

B. Adjectives and adverbs - i can't see how using these would help web design in any way, it may make the text more enjoyable, or more effective, but the web design in general, i doubt it.

D. Small, unobtrusive lettering can be handy, but can also be quite painful, especially if someone has vision problems.

So obviously, the best of these would be an attractive design with eye-catching graphics, but remember, a bit of all of these can also help make up a great website. You never want too many graphics, but you also never want too much text, you need to find a balance, then people will enjoy your site.

For Question 2:

%26gt; Neither A nor B, as both don't have much to do with vector graphics.

For Question 3:

%26gt; I think its a specification sheet.

Good Luck on your project,

How did you learn Web Design and how long did it take you to be able to build a site?

You can learn to build a web page in the space of an afternoon.

Building a site, well that takes a lot longer - mainly due to the complexities of plugins, sytlesheets, databases and the like.

But given that some sites are just a few basic pages, say a month.

How did you learn Web Design and how long did it take you to be able to build a site?
I am learning web design - i have done X/HTML and CSS i am just starting JavaScript, done some practice sites and built my notes into a mini website (off-line) but not actually done a proper website yet. However, i am a slow learner so it would probably be quicker for you.

You can find everything you need at www.w3schools.com
Reply:less then a day at www.blogger.com and i earn money using Google Adsense its awsome
Reply:There is no simple way to create a web site. As a person who has been involved in webpage design since the day of Windows 3.11 and Netscae Navigator 1.1, I may be able to tell you some tips about web site creation.

First of all you must decide your web site's topic or theme. You should work on something you are good at. For instance, you can do something about programming, sports and games, travel, books review, astronomy, health, education, any hobby, and etc.

Next, do some research by reading books, journal, info from the Internet and etc. Follow by designing a framework for your contents, get the main topic and subtopics properly arranged.

To start writing your contents, you should use a GUI-based webpage development program such as MS Frontpage, Macromedia Dreamweaver and etc. Besides, you should also learn some basics of HTML so that you can customize your page better.

For MS Frontpage, you have to purchase it. However, if you have Windows Vista, you can use notepad that come with it to design your web page using HTML.

After you have done all your web pages, you can then contact a web hosting company to register your domain name and to get a web server to store your files for online viewing. you just need to pay a nominal fee. For example, domain name registration is only about USD$18. Offcourse you can register with a free hosting provides such as

http://geocities.yahoo.com/

You can view my web site that provides free Visual Basic tutorial to get a rough idea on how to create your web site. You can also learn HTML here.

My web site has attracted about 4 million visitors since its inception.

Is web design and web programming a good profession to strive for?

... if you like it. yes.

Is web design and web programming a good profession to strive for?
Yes, if that is what your enjoy and what you are good at. Just about any profession ( except maybe murder, prostitution, etc) is a good profession to strive for if you enjoy doing it.

Now you could enjoy doing something and not be good at it, in which case it might not be good to strive for if you are terrible at it because you may not be able to make a living doing it if you can't make enough money.

I think your question may be more inline with money making. There is a high demand for quality web designers even more if you are a good programmer. So in closing if you loove doing it and are good at if, ooh yes its a very good profession to strive for
Reply:Sure ... Web page design and programminng is very good profession ... like lynda.com ... and others ... many many more
Reply:There are so many web designers who unfortunately, do not now how to market their client's website. The key to successful web design is to acquire knowledge of SEO which places website sonto major search engines so that they can be found and draw in ecommerce.

What's the best book for web design beginners??

I'm fairly on good terms with computers, just never got to web design.

I need a book to design awesome professional wesites and able to show me how to in like no time. Is that even a possibility??

What's the best book for web design beginners??
No, it's not possible to learn to design "awesome professional websites" in "no time." It takes years of practice and study and requires a sound understanding of traditional design theory, color theory, UI principles, and interactivity principles to create top-tier websites.

However, if you do need to learn to make sites quickly, it is possible to get good enough to not embarrass yourself. I recommend the following books:

Then you can look at the source code it generated, making it a great learning tool as well.

We are a small agency, with an army of freelance programmers around the world to assist with certain projects in which their skills lie. I think you will find that most forward-thinking companies operate like this, especially in this time of economic uncertainty.

Any suggestions on where to go for school to learn html, css, web design in Phoenix, Arizona?

And that would be the cheapest possibly? I know this stuff you can learn..doesnt really matter where the degree comes from as long as you know it.

Any suggestions on where to go for school to learn html, css, web design in Phoenix, Arizona?
I attended DeVry University in Phoenix, and got my BS in CIS. I have had great luck getting jobs since I graduated, and am very happy with the education I received. If there is any downside, it is that DeVry is relatively expensive. If you are looking for something more affordable, you might try University of Phoenix, or Phoenix College. It does matter in some sense where you get your degree from too; several companies I have interviewed with were impressed by the fact that I graduated from DeVry, and the interviewers often said something like "wow, you went to DeVry. that's a tough school." So, going to a good school can help in the interview process. If you just got to some fly-by-night place, the interviewer is going to know it. It is their job to know those things. I would suggest checking into the 2 schools I mentioned, as well as others in the area. One word of advice : make sure that wherever you go, the credits are transferrable. At DeVry, all credits are transferrable to other universities, like ASU, U of A, etc. Some schools, like ITT Tech offer classes with NON-transferrable credits, and their degrees are not looked upon as highly. Good luck.
Reply:Check your local community colleges, sometimes they offer web design degrees. They would certainly be more reasonably priced. I looked online, but the results are populated with junk schools, that profess to be colleges and want 16,000 bucks for an associates degree, just ridiculous.

Which one is easier to get a job; Associate Degree in Accounting or Associate Degree in Web Design? Why?

I'm major in accounting right now, but I found out it is pretty boring. I thought it was interesting, but it is boring. Maybe the teacher or the motivation. Also, I found out that in order to get a job in accounting, you must have at least a Bachelor degree and some experience.

I want to change my major to web design, but I would waste more time and money because I have taken accounting and all pre-requisite courses. I think web design is interesting because I always wonder how they created an awesome websites. I don't know about the job prospect. I want your honest opinion, which one is easier to get a job; associate degree in accounting or associate degree in web design? Thank you.

Which one is easier to get a job; Associate Degree in Accounting or Associate Degree in Web Design? Why?
I'll give it to you straight.

I think you'd have a really hard time getting and keeping a job in web design. It sounds like you'd be starting kind of from scratch ("I wonder how they create them...") and to be honest, anything in computers nowadays kind of requires some sort of aptitude coming in. I wouldn't trust any computer science jobs as a long-term career. The technology is advancing too quickly and to expect to still have the same type of job in 30 years.

Accounting is the steadiest field within business. Although I really can't say how much an Associate's would help you, I'm sure it would give you better odds than an Associate's in Web Design. Be warned though: without a BA and CPA, you may be stuck doing really boring work for somebody else, and if you think it's boring now, you'll probably hate your life later.

I'd be cautious about either one of the options.
Reply:I started off as pre-med, as I had some background in it, but moved to computers because I liked them.

Overall, I think I would never have done well in med, because I didn't have the discipline for it, I did, however, have a naturla interest in computers, and the switch was easy. I've never looked back, although I have integrated the two (doing medical software).

If you don't like accounting, and like web design, go for the web design.
Reply:what do you like doing? if its math and repeating stuff and getting a job. then you would think accounting is easier. if you like computers, and building web pages with lot of programing, and not to many jobs. then you would think web design is easier. aether way you go i would get a Bachelor degree not an Associate.

Which software should I buy if I want to teach myself web design?

I learned FrontPage back in the 90's. Is there a new version of that or something better/more popular now?

Which software should I buy if I want to teach myself web design?
I suggest going to http://www.about.com and doing a search for "tutorial HTML web design" and see what pops up. They have excellent beginner and intermediate tutorials on bunches of stuff. Frontpage is OK, for a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) type of editing, but teaches you NOTHING about programming for web pages, just design of the layout. If you are serious about doing actual programming in addition to simple layout design, then you need a decent HTML editor. The bare minimum you need is nothing more the the Noptepad simple text editor which comes with Windoze. But to use Notepad effectively, you need to know HTML backwards and forwards. You can get a free HTML editor from http://www.evrsoft.com called "1st Page." All you need is the free version. It does come in an edition for purchase. 1st Page allows you to use the WYSIWYG mode or edit the HTML directly. 1st Page includes a huge amount of help and reference material, and the price is right, free. This is going to take work on your part. This stuff, working with HTML in addition to the layout design, is not exactly easy, but you can take heart in that a lot of people do it every day.

Try NVU - it's a free version of Dreamweaver (although you can write web sites in Notepad).

Learn html, css, javascript, php and SQL for starters.

Adobe Studio is the full answer to your question, but for just the web design part, Adobe Dreamweaver is kind of the new standard.

Then use Microsoft FrontPage.

At least, that's what my friend (web designer) said he uses.

Does anyone know of a free Web Design course online?

I did a bit of Web Design when I was at college and would love to take it further, but I do not have the resources that some places are asking for.

You want to do web design course so there are some idea for doing this course:

Also google anything on web design and read up on that, also by course books too :)

How do I use my web layout design?

I've made a web layout design in a photo-editing program. How do I use it? Do I need to know PHP? Can I just use HTML and CSS?

I'm a beginner with web layouts. Any and all help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

How do I use my web layout design?
It can be done with html and css ;)
Reply:You have to use the "slice" tool something like Photoshop or Illustrator and then export it to html.

The slice tool divides the different blocks of your layout into %26lt;div%26gt; that you can then style with css and fill in with content in html.
Reply:Your next step in the process is to slice your layout into a small pieces to be referenced in your CSS and/or HTML.

Many image editing/graphics creation software programs have the tools to 'slice and dice' your images into web ready pieces built right into the program. We use Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw and PhotoPaint, Ulead PhotoImpact, and Corel PaintShopPro. All of these have tools for preparing images for the web built in.

This is an art and huge topic all on it's own, but hope this answer at least gets you looking in the right place.

And... You don't need to know PHP.

Happy trails,

What are the best programs to use for a beginner who is interested in web design?

I am a beginner and i am interested in a [SIMPLE] basic program that lets me do everything create layouts, graphics etc. I've tried adobe photoshop cs2 and i hate it. i've also tried the trial version for dreamweaver and it was complicated. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

What are the best programs to use for a beginner who is interested in web design?
If you're serious about learning to design web pages the best way to start is to code by hand. Windows Notepad and a good entry-level book such as "HTML for Dummies" or "Learn HTML in 24 Hours" will give you a good foundation in web design principles.

Any of the web design software applications will seem difficult until you have a better background in HTML fundamentals and some coding experience. As a professional web developer, I'm partial to Dreamweaver but the cost is rather steep for a beginner.

There are several free HTML editors out there that provide "nice to have" features like code hinting and drop and drag. A couple of Wikipedia articles provide a good description of the features to look for in an HTML Editor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML_editor... and a comparison of some of the most popular editors(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_...

Some of free editors available include:

Aptana Studio - http://www.aptana.com/

HTML-Kit - http://www.chami.com/html-kit/

SeaMonkey Composer - http://www.seamonkey-project.org/

If you choose to try one of the free editors make sure you download from a reputable source. Best bet for a safe download is either the actual software publisher or a software clearing house like Downloads.com or SourceForge.net.

Good luck,

Fred
Reply:Begin with setting up your own webpage as your current internet provider will provide free hosting as discussed below.

If you are currently a paid Internet subscriber, you are entitled to a "homepage" which often contains simple navigation and editing tools. And if you use the Netscape browser, the built-in Composer feature is a superior HTML authoring tool which is totally free. You can easily generate a full-blown website as a Homepage.

Good luck!

Reply:Yes, you can use the Dreamweaver. Macromedia DreamWeaver is a good software in web designing. It support many scripts like ASP, Javascript, vbscript and some others. You can try download it as a trial version for free at www.macromedia.com. Try also Fireworks, which also features the same as Dreamweaver, but restricted to only the layouts and layering design. There are many web designing tools, if you need the free ones look for the OSS(Open source) software. There are a lot of alternatives, but I can't guarantee you get exactly like Dreamweaver or Fireworks, which is the best for me so far.
Reply:Dreamweaver is a stunning program and great for web development. It has good support for dinamic PHP websites and lots more. I will not recommend microsofts products as they tend to be lump and tends to do the coding for you.

If you HTML then you can use the coding view in Dreamweaver and then you can just code your website you do not need to know how everything drop-drag-etc works. If you are serious about web development I can recommend very good site.

I want do double major in business, web design, or web developing?
I suggest you take a few classes to explore what you enjoy before you choose your major/minor. Many people change their mind a few times before making this important decision. A double major takes a lot more time, energy, and money; all of which could be invested in your graduate work!

How can i make my web design looks good on all screens?

I just published my website, www.fekrahelwa.com, but when i did, it looks bad in some other screens, how can i fix it?

How can i make my web design looks good on all screens?
What you should do is design your website on an standard screen (800x600) and the website must be centered!!! It will look good on all screens!
Reply:It takes hours of research amd work, but it can be done. IE actually shows website wrong in most situations, so you should design your website to work correctly in Fireworks, and then fix up little things that go wrong in IE.

I recommend using CSS to do all of your layout, and use HTML for your actual content.

You can find a lot of free information on all of this by searching with your favourite search engine.
Reply:Well, taking a look-see at your coding, I noticed that you do not have a DOCTYPE on your home page at all. You also do not have any META TAGS to speak of - important ones would include a TITLE, DESCRIPTION and KEYWORDS. There are those that argue that they are no longer needed, however, for many search engines, they still are.

You can learn the structure of an HTML page here: http://www.w3.org/TR/1998/REC-html40-199...

Also, you do not use CSS. By using CSS, which is a style sheet (Cascading Style Sheet), you would be able to format your layout. (i.e. centering it on the page, fonts, spacing, etc.) Here are some tips for webmasters: http://www.w3.org/QA/Tips/

And a tutorial on CSS is here: http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp

Hope this helps. I think you have a great looking website, now just tweak it a bit, and it could be so much better.

What is PHP exactly when it comes to web design and why is it important?

programming language originally designed for producing dynamic web pages.[1] PHP is used mainly in server-side scripting, but can be used from a command line interface or in standalone graphical applications. Textual User Interfaces can also be created using ncurses. PHP is a recursive initialism for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor.

The main implementation is produced by The PHP Group and released under the PHP License. This implementation serves to define a de facto standard for PHP, as there is no formal specification.

PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML. PHP generally runs on a web server, taking PHP code as its input and creating Web pages as output. However, it can also be used for command-line scripting and client-side GUI applications. PHP can be deployed on most web servers and on almost every operating system and platform free of charge. The PHP Group also provides the complete source code for users to build, customize and extend for their own use.

PHP primarily acts as a filter. The PHP program takes input from a file or stream containing text and special PHP instructions and outputs another stream of data for display.

What is PHP exactly when it comes to web design and why is it important?
PHP is a programing language kind of like Java of C, but it (unlike Java and C) is able to be read by the browser itself without any outside attachments. This makes it more useful for building things of web pages that you need to load fast or when Java is not available. It also makes web pages smaller and makes them take up less bandwidth because you have to transfer less data then with a Java app.
Reply:Take a look at the wiki, it really explains it better then anyone.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PHP

php is not important as such, but in order to create a successfull website, you need to take advance of a program language to create that extra something.

Whats the best web design software for freelance illustrators?

What is a career in graphic design or web design like?

What do you have to know to get your foot in the door?

What is a career in graphic design or web design like?
It really depends what you want to do. The world of web design is a huge area that is filled by lots of different kinds of people (from graphic designers to computer programmers to salesmen).

If you are interested in being a graphic designer (for the web), I would suggest you HAVE to learn Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as a starting point.

Knowledge of progams is not enough though. The two other key ingredients is knowledge of design and talent.

Knowledge of design is best achieve through some form of college course (but can be gained by work experience free/on a low wage).

Talent is the thing that will take you from £15,000 a year to hundreds of thousands of pounds.

If you're seriously interested in being a graphic designer then you could contact us via our website www.dazines.co.uk.

I would say that a career in this business is interesting, varied and always challenging, but much more human than your typical "City" jobs.
Reply:you can start as a freelancer. and after you have enough feedback you can get a job but most designers dont get paid above $30,000 when they start.
Reply:I'm actually working on the exact same thing, but Im sure this is how it goes a lot of the time: Get some education/classes/knowledge about photoshop and adobe illustrator, dreamweaver, etc... then just start doing freelance stuff for people, and then search the internet for companies who are looking for design interns. I heard that the intern route is a real good way to go. Then after that i'd definitely say you have your foot in the door

How can I brush up my web design skills?

Just landed a job with Verizon Business, as a Staff Specialist. In the position I will be creating presentations and misc projects. I will also be helping to reformat their website. I only have about a years experience, but it was on really old software; DotNetNuke. How can I learn more about web design before starting. Also, I have never even used DreamWeaver.

How can I brush up my web design skills?
Go out to your local bookstore, and buy "Quickstart" books on the topic you are looking for. I taught myself Flash, CSS, and InDesign/InCopy by using those books, and they are great.

If you have a little more time, try enrolling at your local community college. Credit hours are cheap, and classes are taught by professionals in each respective field.

There are also some great tutorial websites out there such as http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorials/Dr... for Dreamweaver. Also, the CSS Zen Garden http://www.csszengarden.com can help with CSS design.
Reply:I don't know what version of Dreamweaver you are going to be using, so I can't get you a direct link. I would just recommend doing a Google search for "Dreamweaver tutorials" and then flipping through the pages and taking a few hours every day to try the tutorials, and get a feel for the program. That's what I did.

You could also buy a "Dreamweaver for Dummies" book if you really wanted to. that would have everything in one place for you to work with whenever you needed it.

Hope I helped a little

How much do you make on average per page for web design?

How long does it take to build one page once you get the hang of it?

How much do you make on average per page for web design?
Depends entirely on the complexity and functionality of the web page. The presentation layer (what the users see) layout is a minor component of the development costs of pages that deliver data driven content. But for simple static display pages, you can expect to charge/pay $25 - $100 per page, depending on how many nav links and images it contains.
Reply:Depends on how well you know the program you are using. I use Dreamweaver and it's pretty easy. Once you get the HOME page or (index.htm) page done then all you have to do is keep using that page for all your other pages. For instance, replace your home page info with let's say your "contact info". Once you have replaced that information, all you have to do is "save it / re-name it" as something else like "contact.htm" and that's all. NOW, you not only have your "home page" but, now you have your "contact us" page. This way, the site is uniform and makes your design process much faster then having to create each individual page by scratch. You could also use TEMPLATES which means the pages are already created for you and all you have to do is put in your own information. There are MANY templates out there some are even FREE.... go to this site, there are many nice ones there... http://www.interspire.com/templates/ if you do a search for FREE WEBSITE TEMPLATES, you'll find a bunch but, I like the ones on this page inparticular. Hope that helps you! ALSO, if you are questioning how much to charge for webdesign etc. That is hard to say because it depends on how complex the site is, what kind of site it is (basic info, data base drivin, e-commerce etc) and how long it will take to complete it. I recently had a client who was quoted $3,000 for a 5 page (informational) site which I think was alot for what he wanted..... I charged him less and got the job!! :) Sorry I cant give you an exact price. Here is an article I found that may help you... http://webdesign.about.com/cs/salaries/a...

Hope that helps!

Got a freelance web design project, do I have to declare myself as a business (US)?

Friends of relatives would like me to design their business website. Do I have to go to the city hall and open/declare myself as a business?

I am not planning to go freelance full time, but would just like to earn some money on the side.

Also, what about taxes?

Got a freelance web design project, do I have to declare myself as a business (US)?
You'll be a independent contractor... Basically when you file your taxes you will need to be prepared to give back about 1/3 of your income to taxes %26amp; Social Security... You SHOULD get a 1099 from the biz for your taxes. You don't have to start up a business - there are a lot of costs incurred with doing that - but some day you might want to.

For now, put at least 1/3 of every dollar you earn away for taxes and track all of your expenses that could be related to your doing work independently (milage, phones, internet, software, computer, etc). The more you can deduct for expenses the less taxes you have to pay - which is a good thing! But be sure to document everything... if you're tracking milage - make sure you know how many miles are driven for fun, your regular job and for your freelance work. Make it either written or electronic so that you can prove what you've done.

Good luck - and track everything!!!!
Reply:No, you don't have to declare yourself as a business. But you will have to report the income on a tax return, and pay income tax on it - for tax purposes you'll be considered to be self-employed for this job.

What and how do i use are IDs in web design?

I'm currently designing a website and i was told to seperate the elements into IDs. What does this mean and how is this done?

What and how do i use are IDs in web design?
CSS has been mentioned my other posters, but I'd like to go into a bit more detail as to why giving elements an ID attribute is so handy...

Sample HTML:

%26lt;!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"%26gt;

%26lt;html lang="en"%26gt;

%26lt;head%26gt;

%26lt;meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"%26gt;

%26lt;title%26gt;Sample layout%26lt;/title%26gt;

%26lt;/head%26gt;

%26lt;body%26gt;

%26lt;div id="Container"%26gt;

%26lt;div id="Header"%26gt;

%26lt;ul id="TopNav"%26gt;

%26lt;li%26gt;%26lt;a href="http://www.microsoft.com/"%26gt;Microso...

%26lt;li%26gt;%26lt;a href="http://apple.com/"%26gt;Apple%26lt;/a%26gt;%26lt;/li%26gt;

%26lt;li%26gt;%26lt;a href="http://www.adobe.com/"%26gt;Adobe%26lt;/a%26gt;%26lt;/...

%26lt;li%26gt;%26lt;a href="http://www.macromates.com/"%26gt;Macrom...

%26lt;/ul%26gt;

%26lt;/div%26gt;

%26lt;div id="Main"%26gt;

%26lt;p%26gt;Main content%26lt;/p%26gt;

%26lt;/div%26gt;

%26lt;div id="Footer"%26gt;

Copyright 2006, My Company Inc.

%26lt;/div%26gt;

%26lt;/div%26gt;

%26lt;/body%26gt;

%26lt;/html%26gt;

Ok, so that is fairly straightforward html for a list of links as a navigation bar. Let's make it look nicer with some CSS.

Sample CSS:

html {

font: 12px/1.6em Arial, sans-serif;

}

#Container {

width: 500px;

margin: 0 auto;

padding: 0;

}

#Container #Header {

background: #f3f3f3;

border-bottom: 3px solid #09c;

}

#Container #Header #TopNav {

font-size: 1.2em;

margin: 0 15px;

padding: 0;

}

#Container #Header #TopNav li {

display: inline;

padding-right: 5px;

}

#Container #Main,

#Container #Footer {

padding: 0 15px;

}

To use this CSS, insert this within the 'head' tag:

%26lt;style type="text/css"%26gt;

%26lt;/style%26gt;

and put your CSS in between the start and end 'style' tags.

Cool! Now it looks a bit tidier with some basic text formatting, the header has also been separated from the main area with a little blue bar. All by targetting the element IDs in CSS.

Ok, what else can we do with IDs, other than styling with CSS? How about some javascript?

With the following javascript I'll get a reference to the "Header" element, then get a reference to all link elements within that. Then I'll add what's known as an "Event listener" to call the "alert" function with that elements URL each time any link is clicked.

Sample javascript:

function init() {

var topNav,topNavLinks;

topNav = document.getElementById('TopNav');

topNavLinks = topNav.getElementsByTagName('a');

for (var i=0; i %26lt; topNavLinks.length; i++) {

topNavLinks[i].onclick = function(el) {

alert('My URL is '+this.getAttribute('href'));

return false;

}

};

}

window.onload = init;

To use this javascript, insert this within the 'head' tag:

%26lt;script type="text/javascript"%26gt;

%26lt;/script%26gt;

and put your javascript within the start and end 'script' tags.

There you go now. For any future questions I suggest you sign up to the forums at http://www.sitepoint.com/forum/. They have forums for general web design, javascript programming as well as more advanced topics.

Good luck, and have fun!
Reply:Dont forget that ID's should only be called once on a page - as opposed to classes which can be called as many times as you wish.

For example - you use the id="bluebox" more than once on page it wont be considered valid mark up. But if you created it as a class in CSS, then you could call it as many times as you wanted without it affecting your validated mark up.

This is a guidline only, it wont stop your page working, but if you intend to build a page using valid mark up, then it wont be valid.

Validation is very important these days. As is cross browser compatibilty.

Hope this helps
Reply:IDs is what you name a control or html tags. It makes one input box different from the next.

example:

%26lt;input type="text" id="txtMain" name="txtMain" style="width:300px;" /%26gt;

%26lt;input type="text" id="txtMain2" name="txtMain" style="width:300px;" /%26gt;

although, you would use name to refer to each textbox, you would use id to format using cascading style sheets (CSS). CSS is a way you can alter the look of your code, like color, font-size, size, etc.
Reply:Well In FrontPage you right click for example on a table and table properties%26gt;Style. On ID name it something, whetever you want

or the HTML

%26lt;table border="1" width="100%" id="hello2"%26gt;

The "ID=" tag means the ID name and "hello" is the ID name.

You can use it also for CSS to change the format of the object. Like Size, Color, etc
Reply:I think you're being told to use CSS. The idea is that instead of repeating lots of tags to do with the width of this and the padding of that, you define "classes" of tag, and then by simply linking this id to a tag, it automatically knows how much it should be spaced etc.

Ok, that was a poor explanation... just Google for CSS and it'll all become clear lol

Will learning web design on a PC be tough to transition to a Mac environment?

hi,

I am going to learn flash and dreamweaver soon. I am trained on a Mac but I have a good oportunity to learn web on a PC which is very very close to my house and is cheaper than the place that can teach me on a Mac. If I do learn on a PC will I face a tough time switching to a mac (since thats what I have at home and most employers do).

Please help.

Will learning web design on a PC be tough to transition to a Mac environment?
there is not going to be much difference as long as you're familiar w\ those adobe programs.
Reply:You will see some change but the basics should still be the same
Reply:No. Web development is dependent upon the type of browser the user is using not the os of the developer. However, you will need to learn how to write detect the browser type and write browser specific code to ensure your pages will always display properly.

By the way I've worked as a web developer for several different companies and have never used a mac, I don't know where your claim is coming from.

Why?
look at the classifieds online in your area, that will help you decide, but personally i believe the accounting will be most helpful in finding sufficient employment that can pay back your financial aid when you graduate. web design is something that millions and millions of people do now and the demand is no where near as high as accounting experience is and it can help you get just about most office jobs web design can only get you one thing web design :D
Reply:I think an accounting gig would be much easier to find than web design. The web design industry is innundated with designers now. Also, I have a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting that I have never used practically. By that I mean, I have never had an accounting job, but I have working in business, primarily sales, marketing, and business development. I have found that the Accounting background was very helpful and I use a lot of the principles in my business life. So, just because you are studying it now doesn't mean you will be bookkeeping the rest of your life, but it is a nice skill set to have in other jobs and it is a very attractive degree to potential employers.

Also (as a former executive recruiter) I would suggest you try and go the extra two years and get your Bachelor's Degree. With the amount of people that are getting 4 year degrees these days, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get the best jobs with only an Associate's Degree. As far as the money speant on education goes, it is the best investment you will ever make in your life. And, short of spending money on a lottery ticket and winning, you will never get more money back from money you spend than on your degree. With a 4 year degree, I got a really good job right out of college and was making $100,000 per year by the time I was 28, and paying back the loans for college was very easy at that income levels. (Also, the interest you pay on you student loan is tax deductible) I truely believe that getting my 4 year put me in a position to make the kind of money I'm making now, and allows me to have a very comfortable lifestyle.

Im trying to start a web design business?

im looking for a name. im in a wheelcjair. so i was thinking

wheely's web design - we're wheely good

or

ABC web design - we have All Bases Covered

which do u think would be best

Im trying to start a web design business?
When naming something, whether business or product, you want it to be unique (or even flashy) so that it can be memorable. That is why companies pay millions of dollars to come up with Cingular, Verizon, Yahoo, Google, etc.

Names that are too generic tend to get lost. Web design business is a tough business.

Of course, good work will get you business, but you want to ensure that people remember you as well.

If the choice is between the two, I'd go with Wheely's Web Design.
Reply:You and 10 Million others, this is a tough business to break into unless you have a niche. I would pick a niche you might have some connections in and reate the name to that. I do auto dealers and picked SpeedPoint (get to the point fast)
Reply:Consider sp-wheelchairbound-webdesign.com or . whatever
Reply:i personally like the ABC idea. it's more professional i think
