How can I get freelance web design and development projects?

Im from India and looking for long term freelance web based projects like website redesign, flash design, web based applications, ecom website development projects

How can I get freelance web design and development projects?
I'd put together the best web site I possibly could, link it to other sites with really useful resources, then e-mail those sites to let them know you've linked to them. Often, they will give you a link back as a courtesy. That way, you can get some notice without needing to warp your content to pull in the search engines. As a part of your site, let people know you are available to do web sites on a freelance basis.

The only web designer I ever considered hiring (I was once a printer; can't stand having anyone else design anything for me, and graphic design is graphic design, so it was only considered) got my attention that way. Sure, it didn't lead to work in my case, but those who know me would tell you even getting me to think about it was an achievement.
Reply:You should try to either post your expertise on freelancer websites or bid on jobs on those sites. Some of the good sites are:

What is a good name for a freelance web design business?

I would like to start my own little business. I want the name to make a person think of young, new, exciting, professional, fresh, creative. Got any ideas on a name that will convey these thoughts? Thanks:)

What is a good name for a freelance web design business?
The naming of your business could be one of the most important decisions you will make. A name's originality and legal availability will create a real asset value of its own, as it becomes marketed and gains market acceptance.

The name you choose will become the focal point of all the benefits and features that relate to your business. Customers will be able to find and refer others to it in the future.

Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route...

I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and/or family and throw a "name party" %26amp; have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research.

I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free %26amp; a great place to start, so I'd try them out first.

Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending %26amp; registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I'm not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You'll also want to check domain names %26amp; yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success %26amp; happiness in all your ventures!
Reply:I'm glad my answer helped you out. Thank you for the best answer vote!

Should I hire salesmen to sell my web design services?

I have a web development business and I was thinking about hiring a couple of salesmen to sell my services. Do you think it's a good idea? What are the risks involved and how should I deal with them?

Their job will be to visit local businesses and offer my services to them. They will earn about 50% of the sale. For example, my main web design package costs $1099 USD and they can get a commission of about 500 for it. The reason I don't want to to this by myself is because I'm NOT good at selling, I'm a shy type of person and also, I think I can earn much more if I have someone doing the selling for me while I focus at what I do best, web design. Thanks for your comments and ideas...

Should I hire salesmen to sell my web design services?
Find the right salesperson and I would say why not. Do not hire someone who is not experienced in this field..
Reply:i can help you with that
Reply:Have you thought about hiring a telemarketing company? Their fees are fairly reasonable. However, MAKE SURE you check them out with BBB for any complaints first.

Another idea would be to buy a mailing list, printing postcards and mailing them out. There are many companies that will print, stamp, and mail them out within a few days. All you need to provide is mailing list and postcard design.

I am suggesting these ideas because I am not quite sure how many people will sign up for this part time job. Websites are fairly hard to sell from what I gathered. To be working on commssion only might not attract too many talented people.

What you need is marketing consultant. You need to Market yourself and your servie.

If I were you, I would definitely look into telemarketing service and postcard mailings. Even join a Chamber of Commerce. Most chamber of commmerces do not recomment businesses that are not members.

Good Luck.
Reply:I am skeptical about this.

Try to communicate with your competition and ask them how they go about Marketing their services.

When I was looking for someone to help me set up a web based Newsletter - I went to Google and other Search Engines.

There are a lot of organizations out there who want to E-Mail a Newsletter - BUT NOT AS AN

ATTACHMENT. We should declare a War on attachments.
Reply:I think that that you have the right idea. You know your limitations and have the for-thought to realize what you must do to take your business to the next level. Just a few things to think about:

I think that you should hire a sales/marketing consultant. This person should be an adviser, not your salesman. They should realize this role and not abuse it. They would also be the perfect person to help you to choose the right sales persons for the job. Good Luck.
Reply:Great question. Send me an email - there is a great way to deal with this profitably.
Reply:The only problem with this type of service is that it's rather hard to sell, and a lot of people do not want to work on a commission only.

You might consider hiring one employee to do this with good sales references and experience. Someone with experience at sales would be worth an investment. Salary plus 30% commission is fair.

I think you will be hard pressed to find people who will work for commission only

An investment in a savvy salesperson with solid references is worth it. A fair salary plus commission is the normal pay for this. Also, I would recommend providing them with a company car. They can drive to potential customers in your area and sell your service. HUGE advantage.

What is a appropriate response to a client refusing to pay for web design work?

And refusing to pay for the work done where the client has constantly changed their mind meaning hours of uninstalling and installing and modifications have had to be undone/redone

What is a appropriate response to a client refusing to pay for web design work?
Do you have a oral or preferably a written agreement? If so threaten them with legal action. Also as mentioned above change the access to the site, and temporarily remove the home page. With a message saying, "Site suspended due to billing issue"

And take this as a lesson, this is the reason professional designers, take a retainer up front, charge x for every major change, and invoice frequently.. its just good business.
Reply:Remove the design from the website and tell them that you refused to help them unless they pay up.
Reply:Deface the web site
Reply:In the UK you can pursue them through the small claims court (Up to £10000) https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/csmco2/ind...

You should have proof of work to hand but initially you do nothing but make a statement that they owe you money. The cost of bringing the action is low and will be added to their costs.

I would advise that you do not deface any of their web site as it weakens your case.

Next time write a contract that stipulates what you will do, at what point the project is 'frozen' and clauses that state penalties if they require late changes (or if you are late in doing their work within the contract - makes it look more balanced). Insist on progress payments rather than invoicing it all at the end and keep a gut feeling in mind when you deal with clients.

Good luck.
Reply:If you have a contract or written agreement then pursue the legal route. If not, could you change the access conditions (add in a password or something) to make the site inaccessible.
Reply:If they don't pay they don't get. Call a lawyer. They can't use any of your work if they don't pay.
Reply:Assuming you have FTP access to the web server, you'll get their attention really fast if you change their homepage to read something like, "Technical difficulties please try again later."
Reply:The cordial way to do it, assuming you have ftp access, is to let them know that in one week if you haven't received payment —your work is coming down. It works every time. It's never failed me. I guarantee the check will be there by the end of the week. The sad thing is I have had to use that tactic on 70% of my website projects to get the final payment. But like others said you should always require money upfront, so if they do drop off the face of the earth at least you got something out of it, and once you take your work down, they will have paid for nothing (which insures that they will pay the final check, so whatever they already paid you isn't wasted).

I am about to graduate, what areas of Web & Graphic Design are best?

I am interested in finding a nice job in Web/Graphic Design, does anyone have any recommendations for where to start? Any programs I should start self-teaching myself? Places to stay ahead of the game...

I am about to graduate, what areas of Web %26amp; Graphic Design are best?
my advice would be to familiarise yourself with flash and adobe illustrator.
Reply:I hope you mean you're graduating high school... cause if you're graduating college with a degree in Graphic Design you should already know the answer to your question.

Basically, learn all of Adobe Creative Suite 3, HTML and CSS.

Chances are you won't be able to land a graphic design job right off, so freelancing is a good place to start. Below are a couple good websites to find freelance work, and the last site is a good resource for quite a few areas of graphic design.

Reply:For a one-page website design, you shouldn't be paying more than $20. I would recommend asking around your friends and family, someone's bound to know something or two about web design.

For a business, you will also probably want a domain name to seem more professional. Geocities has great uptime, but if you want the best price check web hosting search engines like HostSearch.com. Because it is just a small page, you won't need more than 150 mbs unless you use storage. Depending on how many visitors you expect, you won't need more than 5gb of monthly bandwidth. I would recommend MaxieHost (http://www.maxiehost.com/us/shared.htm) with Plan One or Two. It's really cheap and close to the dollar-per-month price range.

Is there such a thing as a web page design major?
If you're in the process of looking, a better term for that field is Web Development or Web Programming.

I don't know for sure if there is a program specifically for Web Development/Programming, but you probably could major in computer programming specializing in Web Development/Programming.

How to let users create their own page in my web design?

Complicated question?

I'll explain. What i want is for users to be able to customize their own pages within my website. I am working on each having a username and password at the moment. Anyway what i want is that from a set of images they can select a background image or a style for their page and then they can add content like photos and text on their page.

Is there a code out there that i can just edit and use?

How to let users create their own page in my web design?
What you're really describing here is a content management system (CMS.)

The bad news is, these things usually require some knowledge of PHP and databases (usually MySQL) if you want to make it yourself.

The good news is you can often find one that does what you want with a lot less effort.

Look at http://www.opensourcecms.com/ to see a huge number of free CMS programs you can play around with.

Your hosting service may already have some installed or available for easy installation.

Installing a CMS usually requires some comfort with PHP and databases, but running it can usually be done completely through the browser with the included control panel.

I asked a site to make a rating site and they said it would cost over 10,000

Approx how much would it cost to hire a web design company to make a photo rating site?
Without any more information, then 10,000 ($? £?) isn't that unrealistic.

Is the site for a hobby or for a business? If it's the latter then you may find the expense is quickly recouped by having a fantastic website.

I just graduated College? I want to pursue Graphic/Web Design, where do I start???

I have learned most of the softwares that I think are needed to develop websites and graphics. What I want to know is should I try and start my own contract work or should I start looking for companies? I live in a small town, so there are no opportunities here. If I did work for a design company, it would involve moving.

go to www.CareerBuilder.com, you can find specific openings of jobs all across the US. Sometimes it even lists the starting salary.

It is possible to get Microsoft Certification in Web Design without had studied in a College/Uni?

Yes.

I attend a career oriented high school. I'm a senior...We have "majors" here... and mine is Advanced Computer Software... I'm in a Microsoft Certification program right now... I'll have it before I go to college...

As a ballpark figure, it could be from $100 to $500 depending on how fancy your requirements are (especially if any interactive features like Flash or AJAX are involved).

What products make your web design job more productive?

It can be software, third party components, hardware, furniture and everything that can help you to do a job better. I am looking for new stuff to purchase to make work better.

What products make your web design job more productive?
Solution:

Try Adobe Dreamweaver current verion is CS3. It definitely increase your productivity. It has both versions: for the Mac and Windows.
Reply:Macromedia Dreamweaver MX4 is the best on the market I use it myself. But you need to know something about coding to use it to its fullest.

For the beginners it is best to use a program like Microsoft Front Page 2003 or higher. You don't need to know any coding to be able to make a great page. You make the choice that is best for you, but if you don't know anything about coding then I recommend the Microsoft Front Page.
Reply:web design job is very innovative. The product use to enhance your design needs designing tools and third party tools as open source to add more functionality on the system .

How much does it cost to have someone design a web page for me?

I need to know about how much it would cost to have someone design a web page with shopping cart software for me. I own my own business, and was wondering if I should get my own web page, or is it just easier to continue with an ebay store????

How much does it cost to have someone design a web page for me?
It depends upon quality and design of webpages. A good designed webpage cost you around US $100 and rest of pages may cost you from $30 to $70. I want some more fucntionality like dynamic pages add $30 to it.
Reply:If you have a business, yes you need a website. Irregardless if you do biz locally or internationally - today, a website is expected the same as a company phone number or business card.

As for how much, this falls under the category "you get what you pay for". Don't make the mistake of hiring your nephew/neighbor kid/mailroom dude etc. Spend some time online and look at good and bad websites and take notes. This is an extension of your business so do your homework the same way you thought out your initial business plan. Decide on color schemes, navigation, etc before you shop for a webmaster. A professional website developer will be asking you these questions if their worth their salt, the more you hedge or are undecided, the more expensive and less what you want it'll be.

When you have a rough draft of what you want, go back to the websites you liked. Usually at the bottom of the index/home page you'll see a copyright or hosted by/developed by blurb that links to their website. E-mail or phone them and ask about their previous projects and pricing structure. Contact the website owners they already built and ask them about turn-around times and how communicative they were. Get as many references as you can and make a unhurried, informed decision.

Hope this helps and your business blossoms !!
Reply:http://www.odesk.com

You'll love me.
Reply:The cost of a website depends on how much business you're looking to deal. Web design is a form of advertisement, allowing you to get noticed. Unfortunately if you have a boring website, people will 90% of the time look for more attractive avenues, even if you have a great product!

You have experience with sales on eBay, so I'm sure you already know enough about marketing. Lots of webmasters out there are negotiable on the price points, however not all webmasters are created equal.

I suggest you look at what designs are selling. Not to plug myself but I do e-commerce sites and I've got to tell you... having the right design really does make all the difference in the world. It's all psychological.

Web Design - what's the easiest way to make your content centre itself in a browser window?

I know how to do this using frames - but it always gives me ugly scroll bars in the centre area! There must be a simple way. I use Dreamweaver. Tables maybe? Any help would be appreciated!

Web Design - what's the easiest way to make your content centre itself in a browser window?
You really should avoid using tables and get used to DIVs. Google much prefers them. I used tables and was a huge supporter, until CSS standards began to work in both Mozilla and IE. Now I only use tables for things that are actually tables of data. With the new sortable column features that CSS offers, DIVs are often even better for that.

This makes an 800px wide box, and centers everything inside it. Remove the "width:800px" and the DIV will stretch to fill the entire width of the window.

%26lt;div style="text-align:center;width:800px"%26gt;

or based on what html editor you are using you can use their center buttons to center it.

But sometimes the above may not work and if it dosen't you may have to take a look at your code and see if you have some extra spacing codes   or extra div tags %26lt;div%26gt; or span tags %26lt;span%26gt; or other format tags that may be messing you the alignment,

%26lt;table align="center"%26gt;

%26lt;/table%26gt;
Reply:In the html put

%26lt;center%26gt;Around whatever you want%26lt;/center%26gt;
Reply:Not having a look at the code for this page I assume it's made with tables and table columns. Placing a %26lt; center%26gt; tag before the table will center it on the page for you. Then it's a process of using nested tables (tables within tables).

I need help with some review questions for my web page design class?

I'm majoring in web page design and I have some review questions and I can't seem to find the answers so hopefully someone can help me.

1. Which of the following page-related terms refer to the same thing?

A. Type page/text area

B. Trim size/text page

C. Type page/trim size

D. Open line/leading

2. A long document, such as a book, can usually be divided into which of the following three main sections?

A. Copyright section, main text, appendix

B. Preliminary pages, main text, front matter

C. Preliminary pages, main text, index

D. Preliminary pages, main text, back matter

3. Which of the following must a designer be aware of when planning the design of a document?

A. The person who wrote the document

B. The retail and wholesale prices of a document

C. The intended audience

D. The professional printer to be used

I need help with some review questions for my web page design class?
1: I've been in Web design since 1998 and never heard of "type page," "text page," "trim size" or "open line" used in a Web context (I have 12 years of newspaper experience, and have heard those terms used in print). I'd go with D but I think your instructor made up these terms.

2. Again, these terms are used in printing, not Web work. Books are actually divided most commonly into "front matter" (copyright / ISBN, foreward, preface, perhaps reviews, etc.), chapters and "back matter" (afterward, acknowledgments, author bio, appendices, index, etc.) I'd go with D but again, your instructor made this up.

3. C: The intended audience. You must make technical concessions to the printer, and the author is often going to want to have some say in presentation, but as a rule, you design for the target audience. Collateral you make for teens generally will not look like similar information you make for seniors.

2. A

3.C

Although, as a website designer, I've never heard of these types of questions pertain to a web page design position. !!

Is web design part of the Web Technology career?

I mean, if i choose Web technology as my major/career, can i do web design?

Is web design part of the Web Technology career?
Yes, but keep in mind that there are a lot of elements of Graphic Artistry involved in web "design". Nowadays most prefessional-level websites are developed by a team. One person or group designs the function of the site while another designs the form. You can go either way, but it's unusual for a single individual to do both jobs in most companies. (Not unheard of... just unusual.)
Reply:yes, it is

check link and/or google "web design career"

Reply:Not always. I was taught web design at a advertising art college that specialized in graphic design.

Design is design...whether it is online or not.

I always consider web technology to be programming and making design "functional".

What are some web design programs that are available?

I'm looking to build a website for my sons' football team. I don't have much programming experience, so I was wondering if there were programs out there that could help.

Actually it doesn't matter if the program (includes Flash) is free or not. I'm just looking for a program that will help in constructing a nice site.

What are some web design programs that are available?
There is basically lots of components to website building, there is the design stage, the coding stage and the testing stage.(thats just put simple) If you are looking top end web programing such as PHP and Javascript you will want to look for a program called Dreamweaver (part of the adobe family)

If what you perhaps are looking for is more low end of the market microsoft do a package called Front page. This is a basic and simple user interface alot like word which is easy to use and can switch between the design and code side of the site.

There is also a program called iWeb by Apple its a simple program which allows you to simply drag and drop information onto a website which makes it simple and easy to use.

(or there is always blogspot which is free ;) )

What are good advertising tips for web design service?
I am opening a recreation business, and have been reading a book called "Guerrilla Marketing" by Jay Conrad Levinson. It is easy reading and is very helpful in many different advertising ideas and plans. You definetely need a link to your site from any of your clients. Word-of-mouth advertising is by far the best and most cost efficient.

Reply:As a business man, who regularly gets called by people wanting to do web services for me, I can say that almost all their approaches are so far off that I won’t waste 5 minutes with them. So, let me tell what I would listen to. How their services will save me money, time and risk. At the end of the day, every business person makes decisions only these three factors.

Two examples:

1) The type of opening guarantees I will hang up:

“Hello, we have the {sexiest, greatest, newest, etc.} technologies. We do flash, PHP, AJAX, etc.” this is all about them and their wants; nothing about me and my needs.

2) I will listen for a while to this person. Notice that not one technical word was uttered. He talked about things that matter to me.

“Hello, I see you have a web presence and I believe that with little investment you could be doing a lot more business…”

Hope this helps.

How much would I pay to for a custom web design for a site like or better than http://www.deciccohomes.ca ?

I want to pay for original custom web design work only - no templates. Moreover, I don't want to pay more than $25 a month for hosting and maintanance afterwards but I would like the same professional to do this. To be perfectly clear, I would like a serious full time professional with a solid portfolio to do this. I need direct contact and personal attention. I have digital photos and brochures for the designer to draw from.

Note: I build homes, but this does not mean that I would like to be ripped for all I am worth. I had a local studio offer to do this for $12,000 and $300 a month afterwards for hosting and maintenance. I am sure that adding two or three photos every month would not cost this much.

What would a serious professional web designer in Ontario charge for a job like this?

Please no referrals.

How much would I pay to for a custom web design for a site like or better than http://www.deciccohomes.ca ?
Why not get more quotes? I doubt you hire anyone else with just one quote. The first quote you have looks a little high unless the $300 includes more than just hosting.
Reply:Well, im going to tell you right now it is going to be a lot more to pay someone to do this for you. It costs at least $30 a month just to host the site alone, let alone have someone update and maintain it. $300 doesnt sound reasonable, especially if they are rarely having to do work. Is it going to have any type of payments on the site? or just a web site to look at your design ideas? If its just a plain website and no money will be exchanged off of it, you can maintain it yourself, make sure and load up the page whenever you can and make sure it still running. Im not sure why you would have to pay someone to add the pictures, you should really pick up a book and learn how to yourself, it might take you only 10 minutes, its quite easy using html. As of starting and putting the stuff together yea someone is going to want a big chunk of change. but 12,000 sounds pretty crazy. Granted we are talking canadian dollars right? i would say $2000 u.s. sounds reasonable. And sorry to tell you but the website you have listed is using a template. There are over 3 million types of templates, general all sites have a template, if they didnt things would just be randomly placed on the page. I take it you dont have to much pc experience. If anything pay for someone to start it up, and then if you really cant figure it out for yourself, pay for the job each time something needs updated, instead of monthly. I just think you should read some html books and get it done yourself.
Reply:I would say $2250 Canadian for designing a static website of this genre and size from scratch - no templates - that is given you really would provide the photos and the text.

$25 a month for hosting and maintenance would be reasonable for the updates you describe but you could end up paying more depending on the uptime you demand and the traffic you use.
Reply:I'm a web-designer/programmer from Rochester, NY. I'm not sure about in Canada, but I can tell you that the going rate for basic web-design is about $250.00 a year here in Rochester. There may be some other fee's applied to the application of such design if you need to buy a domain and a host site.

Regardless, even if you have to have it built from scratch, the overall price should not exceed $300.00 a year.

Look, if you want to make a good website, forget the cheap and easy software. Professionals don't use that just because it's more difficult!!!

Go to http://www.w3schools.com and learn how to do it like a professional. This is the best site to go.

Choosing as name for a web design studio?

Ok, ive been working on web pages for like 6 months or so and I want to open my own studio. The only problem is I cant think of a name. Can anyone give me some tips please. I mean "something" Studios would be fine.

Choosing as name for a web design studio?
You need to do better than that.

I work for a creative agency in Hollywood, and let me tell you right now that if you're planning on making a living as a web designer purely off your technical skills, you are going to fail miserably. Being a successful designer is about mixing technology with the utmost creativity. Most "designers" don't get that.

And if you intend on being successful -- meaning that you are indeed very creative -- then you ought to be able to think of a name.

Not trying to be harsh, just speaking the truth. This is a tough market.

Web Design...Is it easy to do any computer jobs from home? If so, what should I go back to school for?

I need to work from home. Anyone have any ideas? I need to freelance, because some days I cannot do anything. (I have some health problems)

I was wondering about Web or Graphic Design, but I don't know.

Web Design...Is it easy to do any computer jobs from home? If so, what should I go back to school for?
You could perform web development work from home, or from anywhere that you have an Internet connection (I'm a web developer and I usually work at home, today I'm in Montreal which is 6000 miles from home and I'm working right now!).

You will require skills in HTML and PHP, you should also be familiar with CSS and some database knowledge (MySQL) wouldn't hurt. You also need to know about the business side of things, marketing and SEO (search engine optimization). You'll need to know how to use text editors and FTP programs,as well as graphics tools. And you will need to know the process for registering Domain Names and working with web servers.

Keeping abreast of changes is essential, there are many good forums that will allow you to interact with others in your field (this can be valuable when you work at home,as you will lack the contact with your peers that you would have in an office environment). You can also subscribe to several newsletters.

I suggest that if you're serious that you learn all that you can and then develop a few sites of your own - you could monetize them with affiliate programs and AdSense so that they make a profit. You could then use those sites as a showcase or portfolio, which is invaluable when soliciting clients.

I wish you the best of luck in achieving your goals!
Reply:Well to learn more. Also it widens your horizon. And just in case if things do not work out you might need a degree for help.

How can you find a Web Design Progammer that you can TRUST?
where the internet is concerned, physical location is not an important factor. quality of work *is*, because that's what you're paying for and the end result can be transmitted digitally anyways.

you would get the same quality of programming from a guy in india for a smaller cost than you would an american programmer.

Is there a way to land a job in Web Design without a college degree?

Hi my name is Rob and my career is web design, I have a HS diploma and I've been in college for 5 years now, what would be some advice to land a job as a Web Designer, I have a portfolio but is there a way I can post it on the web? It's over 5MB so geocities won't work for me

Is there a way to land a job in Web Design without a college degree?
I think a good portfolio of work is far more valuable than a college degree in the web design industry. I have a Computer Science degree and work in web development/programming, and most of my web designer co-wokers have little or no formal web design education. Experience, in this case, is much more valuable than education.

There are many places that offer free webhosting, and will give you far more than 5Mb of space. This site has a long list of available hosting companies: http://www.free-webhosts.com/

What do I need to start a simple Web-Design business?

I'm a young kid barely going into college but need extra $

so I decided to build web-pages for a while. I know I will get really good at it after a while. Anyways, I have software and stuff to build pages. Do I need any type of Licensing?

What do I need 2 run my business?

What do I need to start a simple Web-Design business?
I totally hear you, this is what I did... actually do. You have to be four people.

First you have to be a good designer. This only takes time and practice and good use of the internet for free tutorials (I'd link, but I don't know what software you use).

Second, you have to be a good programmer. For some companies, this is two people, one who develops/designs and one who programs. The software program you use is probably 100% compatable for any programming needs. You'll know a programming question if it's "how do I get it to..." That too takes time and good use of tutorials. Maybe even purchasing some books on scripting language.

Third, you have to be a business person. You will need to do basic stuff like registering with your state, in Florida you can incorporate online for $85 (this means having articles of incorporation). You'll also need an EIN from the IRS, you can get that free online, instantly. You'll also need to do basic bookkeeping. You don't have to be a whiz at math, just keep track of all monies. Keep receipts, make invoices, keep copies of all checks, keep everything!

Fourth, you have to be your own marketing guy. You can do everything else great, but if no one knows you're there... Do some basic stuff like yellowpages, web site (should be easy for you) and that. But the best marketing comes from word of mouth. If you can, do some web sites pro bono for people who are connected to lots of other people and then you have someone who got a free website, you got a reference and practice (without the pressure of money involved) and if you're lucky a referral on to other people...

need any further info just holler, jasonherndon@yahoo.com.

Good luck!

I'm a freelance web design and I want to incorporate my business? What type of corporation do I want to be?

I'm a freelance web design and I want to incorporate my business? What type of corporation do I want to be?
If you want a corporation, Type S. However you should probably just use an LLC. for right now. You can still file a schedule C for tax purposes this way....
Reply:Go to www.ex-ecutivedecisions.com and check out the FAQ
Reply:ditto to the first guy
Reply:The answer really depends on your personal situation. C corps and S corps have different advantages and disadvantages. Generally, if you are thinking S Corp. you might just be better off creating an LLC instead - they are taxed the same way, but there is less paperwork with the LLC. With a C Corp, there are certain things that are tax deductible, that are not with an S Corp. For example, health insurance. If you are an employee of your own C Corp, it is tax deductible to the business, and it is not taxable income to you. You lose those tax breaks with an S Corp (or LLC). On the other hand, you may end up paying less taxes in the long run with the pass-through taxation of the S Corp (or LLC) model, because profits (after you pay yourself a modest salary) would flow through to your tax return but would not be subject to employment taxes. Find yourself a good tax attorney or CPA and get a professional opinion based on YOUR PERSONAL SITUATION and ultimate business goals.

What does high level web design cost?

What does a big company typically pay for a design? We are a large company that has received many proposals for designing a large website (design only our programmers take it from there) and quotes have ranged from $5500 to $32,500. Understand that there is significant back and forth and many hours in meetings that are being priced in here, but why such a difference? Some companies seem to be better than others, but we just want to know what is a fair offer so that we can bargain.

Need info on how to make a box within a <td> tag in web design.?

I have a web design that is a table with the %26lt;td%26gt;s or columns. Within the last column, I need to make a series of box outlines. Is there a way to do this without making separate tables for each column?

Need info on how to make a box within a %26lt;td%26gt; tag in web design.?
%26lt;td%26gt; tag denotes a table data or table cell tag.

if you want to make a table you have to add them in this order of tags.

%26lt;table%26gt; - opens a table element

%26lt;tr%26gt; - starts a new row

%26lt;td%26gt; - adds a new cell to the table

%26lt;/td%26gt; - closes the cell

%26lt;/tr%26gt; - etc

%26lt;/table%26gt; - etc

substitute this %26lt;table border = "1"%26gt; if you want to display the table borders

heres an example

%26lt;table%26gt;

%26lt;tr%26gt;

%26lt;td%26gt;first cell on row one%26lt;/td%26gt;

%26lt;td%26gt;second cell on row one%26lt;/td%26gt;

%26lt;td%26gt;third cell on row one%26lt;/td%26gt;

%26lt;/tr%26gt;

%26lt;tr%26gt;

%26lt;td%26gt;first cell on row 2%26lt;/td%26gt;

%26lt;td%26gt;second cell on row 2%26lt;/td%26gt;

%26lt;/tr%26gt;

%26lt;/table%26gt;

If you copy that directly to a html file you can see what it does. the nice thing about tables is that they automatically resize to fit the data that they contain. The downside to them is, if you are building a website with lots of tables it will take a lot longer to load compared to css styling.

if you already have a %26lt;td%26gt; cell like you're explaining, then just find the closing tag for it %26lt;/td%26gt; and add another %26lt;tr%26gt;%26lt;/td%26gt; after it to add another cell. If you're working on a myspace page good luck. Their site has the worst sloppiest broken spaghetti code I have ever seen. It's like they make an effort to code their site as poorly as possible. I have been doing web design and development for a couple of years now and I still have difficulty tweaking my page.

Of you still have questions just drop me a message and some example code to chew on.

How much should I charge per hour/site for web design?

I do web design, both regular HTML and Flash. I have until recently only done sites for friends and family, but now these people are giving me references and I need to have a standard rate.

I have my BA in Communication with a concentration in Media Arts.

Is there a general hourly wage I should ask for? or should I charge by the page (and how much)?

How much should I charge per hour/site for web design?
I don't have an answer, I actually would like to know the same thing.
Reply:Have you thought about charging per project? It seems easier to just package your services, especially if you're going to freelance.

While it maybe reasonable now to charge by the hour, time will come that you'll have lots and lots of code from previous jobs that you can recycle; and therefore, things get quicker and quicker to get done-- and hourly charging is not going to be fair for you in the long run.

Take for example a PSD to HTML+CSS project. The first couple of templates may take a long time to make. But the further you go along, the more recyclable code you already have and so the succeeding pages may only take 2-5 minutes to make. Not good for you if you charged by the hour, right?

But if you charge a reasonable $100 for 10-15 pages of HTMLed PSDs, it doesn't matter whether you are able to make them in 12 hours or in 45 minutes.

It's the same thing with building Flash applications. From project-to-project, you get to save lots of little scripts for animating things, getting data from XML files, and making server requests for other things, which you can reuse later to make your life easier. :)
Reply:I'm sorry, I don't know.
Reply:It depends on your experience and what type of web design you will be doing. I pay general web designers from $25 - $75 per hour and I pay from $50 - $125 per hour for Flash design.

If you need more info, let me know.
Reply:it depends on how long it takes to make the design

but i feel it should be from $70 and above.
Reply:look in the phone book for web designers or advertising...call them and act like you want their services. Ask them what they charge. Call about 5 places and take the average. That's what you charge!

I want to start a home based web design business. What is the best way to start?

You may want to check out freeservers.com they have free pages %26amp; the hosting fees aren't that bad when you want to upgrade.

Then you will want to start learning something about HTML/XHTML so that you can check coding of your pages. A good HTML/XHTML editor is PageBuilder (it's gone public domain now)

Another thing you can do is get the Yahoo SiteBuilder. It's a WYSIWYG editor and can help you learn to code. But remember that your pages may not work in all browsers unless you are using XHTML.

You'll have to pick your own software for that kind of editor. I'm still looking too.

I want to start a home based web design business. What is the best way to start?
First I would suggest getting hosting that you can put all the sites on, and if you are really going to go commercial with the business...buy your own server and get it hosted in a data center.

Do yourself a favour man - just don't - the job market is oversaturated as it is with a dearth of very talented and capable people.

if you REALLY want to then buy books with tutorials or with stuff online, build your own websites, or go to small businesses and build some freebies - but kkeep in mind there's gonna be plenty of others doing exactly the same.

Telling you - go learn to be a plumber or something practical and actually useful.

There are two main skills that go into web design: graphic design and web development. Graphic design is the usual drawing of computer graphics and creating a pleasing layout that's easy to follow. Web development is writing HTML and CSS and following standards.

You can get courses in both of those. There are also online tutorials for HTML and CSS. Personally, I'd recommend finding a course that targets web design as a job (perhaps at a community college) to get started.

Once you feel like you have some skills and are ready to get work, create websites for people to build a portfolio. Do it for free if you need to, since people aren't generally willing to pay unless they can see examples of your work.

Reply:You would probably have a better chance of getting jobs if you attended an accredited school, whether it be a school you actually sit in a classroom for or an online program. One school I've come across, which offers both online and in-person courses for web design (either web design diploma or an actual degree, AS and BS) is http://www.aionline.edu (The Art Institue of Pittsburgh Online Division). I'm not sure of the website for the in-person courses at this school, but it sounds like a great school for web and graphic design, as well as other things.

Also, SATs aren't required at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and, instead, either a GPA of 1.5 or higher (for AS) or 2.0 or higher (for BS).
Reply:Absolutely!

What is a good american university for graphic design, web design and/or business?

Does anyone know a web design company specificly for brass bands?

I need to set one up for brass band I play in.

Does anyone know a web design company specificly for brass bands?
No, that would be weird to have a design company that would just cater to brass bands.

My guess is if you pay any design company would want to make your site.....expensive but willing.

If you are looking for cheap adapt your favorite brass band and tailor it's site to your 'needs'.

Reply:From what I have learned from others is, SEO in India is not that great. They charge cheap prices and usually you get what you pay for. Since English is not their primary language it shows in their writing. If Americans come to your site and read the poorly writing content, it will look bad on you as a business. I wouldn't be cheap with SEO and content. Your business image is at stake.

The cost of Dreamweaver is a little to heafty for me. I don't want to use a text editor. I want to use a program where you don't have to know any HTML.

What are some good alternatives to Dreamweaver for a WYSIWYG web design program?
Try this Free program call Nvu

Try this site. Lots of work:

Reply:Specialize in a certain category / niche / specialty.

For example, you may seek to become "the official web designer for the US Alpaca Breeders association"

Benefits:

- you have a clearly defined, target market so you can speak their language and learn their particular needs

- your marketing $ is more effective because you only need to reach a smaller list of people

- you get continuous improvement as you learn more about the market (instead of starting from zero with each new client)

Reply:Your best advertising vehicle is the most obvious: the internet.

Your best tool: Your own website.

Make sure that your site is SEO so that it's easily found by search engines. And, since it's the US, make sure it's expertly written. (Poor English will cost you potential customers.)

Beyond that, emailing self-promos to directly businesses, advertising agencies, and marketing professionals might help a great deal. (A simple, nicely designed email with a link to your site could suffice.) On that note, it might be wise to focus on areas of expertise. Like, do you have a lot of experience designing sites for hospitals? Or furniture? Than focus on those business first.

Realize that there are thousands of web designers out there so anything you can do to set yourself apart will be huge. Ultimately, your success will hinge on your own skills, which I'm hoping they're of the "mad" variety instead of the "sad" variety.

Lots of luck!

On a more technical less design optic :

- Depending of your skills and interest I would also suggest to read on CSS and DHTML.

- If you want to go deeper into programmation I suggest Ruby on Rail or PHP with MySQL or PostgreSQL but this is out of the design ... :)
Reply:It's best if you actually learn HTML, XHTML, and CSS. Only then would I bother with Dreamweaver and other applications. Of course it's easy to make websites with Dreamweaver, but if you don't know how the code works, then you can't easily fix mistakes if something goes wrong...and often, things go wrong.

FrontPage is a big pain in the butt. It's so outdated and hard for a lot of people to learn.
Reply:I am not a geek, and I got my first computer at age 70. I use Front Page and I construct my pages with tables which give me a lot of control in placing my material. A few years ago I took a course at the local university (I was the old geezer) in HTML (at night, one semester) which allows me to tinker in a rudimentary way with the code--inserting title, descriptions, keywords, etc. which help the search engines. I designed and built two websites. My wife and I are professional artists. I also write. So the gallery site showing our work is loaded with hundreds of images:

www.RyanartDuo.com

The other site is a left of center political site with my cartoons and articles: www.UncleSammySays.com

I tell you all this because If I can do this, anyone can. Good luck.
Reply:The most useful i find are Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia's Dreamweaver. Each have their own advantages.
Reply:Learn how to make Flash websites. For image editing use adobe photoshop.

I want to get a career in Web Design but I don't want to do freelance. Is there another option?

I want to get a career in Web Design but I don't want to do freelance. Is there another option?
Most designers do freelance because it's easier for them - they just like the freedom.

Plenty of companies need webdesigners. But usually, they are creative designers.

In a company, you need to have more specialized skills. If you worked in a web design company, you would need to either be a creative designer or a web developer who knows PHP, ASP, .Net, etc. CSS and HTML is a given. The designer is the one who creates the graphics, images, background, etc.

You need to determine which is your better skill - creative or programming. And make sure you excel in one or the other. That;s how you can get a job in a company.

Freelancers can afford to be OK with creative and development because they are working for themselves.

You can find jobs pretty much anywhere. Lots of designers get jobs jumping from one contract job to another through an employment agency. You are technically working for the agency, not yourself.

You can find a job in a design agency, interactive marketing agency, or development firm. Some IT firms integrate web design/development. Some individual companies employ their own in house designer/developer. Examples include big real estate brokerages, software development firms, financial companies, or online retailers.

You gotta look, but the opportunities are there.
Reply:Look in the NY Times or LA Times Sunday want ads. Or learn programming, get a job as a programmer and hope the company asks you to "just take a look" at their web site.

When everyone with a $200 computer claims to be a web designer, no one is hiring web designers.

I would like to do Web Design as a home business? What language do I need to learn?

What are all the languages or programsthat I need to learn to start making websites for local businesses.

I would like to do Web Design as a home business? What language do I need to learn?
That's a tricky question. Normally people would answer HTML or CSS, but before you can even think of building a website (I know where you are coming from). Who do you want to build websites for? Do you cater to SMB (Small-Medium Businesses) or are your goals outsrtetched towards Large Scale? Once you have decided who your target clients are (there is a such a thing) you will have a feel of the kinds of demands needed for each particular client.

Before you learn any web language research your target market(s) and clients. Then research the kinds of sites from industries that you want to work for or represent. Don't just look at the sites and comment on how "pretty" it looks. Disect the site's elements: Why did the webmaster decide (out of 45 other web layouts) that the current one is best? How does this site communicate to the target audience? What is it about this site that makes it so appealing and why?

Once you have finished your background (very important) research, from there you should be able to get a basic understanding of the kind of languages (not to mention web authoring programs) to use.

Example: One of your clients distributes computer hardware up and down the East Coast. She wants to expand her clientel to the MidWest towards California. You do not have to worry about business expansions, but you will have to concern yourself with SQL and ASP to manage the flow of an evergrowing database.

Last Example: You finally landed an account with MTV (lucky stiff). MTV's main bread and butter are teens (eventhough their target audience is like teens to young adults). You will have to figure a site to cater to teens. You will definitely need HTML, CSS and Flash (animation program, but a must nonetheless) to start.

I hope this gives you some insight on where to go from there. You must above all know your target industry before you figure out what languages and programs to learn. Though the above examples are for a slightly larger crowd the same approach works for all.
Reply:for websites u just need to know html code, and you can just copy and paste a lot of that.
Reply:You can learn HTML for free at http://www.w3schools.com/

After you learn HTML you need to know CSS and learn PHP, Perl, Java and ASP.

Should I study graphic design or web publishing?

I want to go back to school to study Digital Communications but I am not sure if I should specialize in graphic design or web publishing. They both sound like good choices. Could anyone give me some pros and cons on this? Thank you!

Should I study graphic design or web publishing?
web or content publishing is a lot easier than graphic designing . yes both needs practice and quality into it ... when you are pro on both what you really need is to promote yourself online ..

thats the biggest problem pro on designing are facing .. you need a marketing arm for that ...
