What is a career in graphic design or web design like?

What do you have to know to get your foot in the door?

What is a career in graphic design or web design like?
It really depends what you want to do. The world of web design is a huge area that is filled by lots of different kinds of people (from graphic designers to computer programmers to salesmen).

If you are interested in being a graphic designer (for the web), I would suggest you HAVE to learn Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as a starting point.

Knowledge of progams is not enough though. The two other key ingredients is knowledge of design and talent.

Knowledge of design is best achieve through some form of college course (but can be gained by work experience free/on a low wage).

Talent is the thing that will take you from £15,000 a year to hundreds of thousands of pounds.

I would say that a career in this business is interesting, varied and always challenging, but much more human than your typical "City" jobs.
Reply:you can start as a freelancer. and after you have enough feedback you can get a job but most designers dont get paid above $30,000 when they start.
Reply:I'm actually working on the exact same thing, but Im sure this is how it goes a lot of the time: Get some education/classes/knowledge about photoshop and adobe illustrator, dreamweaver, etc... then just start doing freelance stuff for people, and then search the internet for companies who are looking for design interns. I heard that the intern route is a real good way to go. Then after that i'd definitely say you have your foot in the door
