What are some good alternatives to Dreamweaver for a WYSIWYG web design program?

The cost of Dreamweaver is a little to heafty for me. I don't want to use a text editor. I want to use a program where you don't have to know any HTML.

What are some good alternatives to Dreamweaver for a WYSIWYG web design program?
Try this Free program call Nvu

http://www.nvu.com

Nvu (which stands for "new view") makes managing a web site a snap. Now anyone can create web pages and manage a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML.

For example, you may seek to become "the official web designer for the US Alpaca Breeders association"

Benefits:

- you have a clearly defined, target market so you can speak their language and learn their particular needs

- your marketing $ is more effective because you only need to reach a smaller list of people

- you get continuous improvement as you learn more about the market (instead of starting from zero with each new client)

Your best tool: Your own website.

Make sure that your site is SEO so that it's easily found by search engines. And, since it's the US, make sure it's expertly written. (Poor English will cost you potential customers.)

Beyond that, emailing self-promos to directly businesses, advertising agencies, and marketing professionals might help a great deal. (A simple, nicely designed email with a link to your site could suffice.) On that note, it might be wise to focus on areas of expertise. Like, do you have a lot of experience designing sites for hospitals? Or furniture? Than focus on those business first.

Realize that there are thousands of web designers out there so anything you can do to set yourself apart will be huge. Ultimately, your success will hinge on your own skills, which I'm hoping they're of the "mad" variety instead of the "sad" variety.

Lots of luck!

On a more technical less design optic :

- Depending of your skills and interest I would also suggest to read on CSS and DHTML.

- If you want to go deeper into programmation I suggest Ruby on Rail or PHP with MySQL or PostgreSQL but this is out of the design ... :)
Reply:It's best if you actually learn HTML, XHTML, and CSS. Only then would I bother with Dreamweaver and other applications. Of course it's easy to make websites with Dreamweaver, but if you don't know how the code works, then you can't easily fix mistakes if something goes wrong...and often, things go wrong.

FrontPage is a big pain in the butt. It's so outdated and hard for a lot of people to learn.
Reply:I am not a geek, and I got my first computer at age 70. I use Front Page and I construct my pages with tables which give me a lot of control in placing my material. A few years ago I took a course at the local university (I was the old geezer) in HTML (at night, one semester) which allows me to tinker in a rudimentary way with the code--inserting title, descriptions, keywords, etc. which help the search engines. I designed and built two websites. My wife and I are professional artists. I also write. So the gallery site showing our work is loaded with hundreds of images:

The other site is a left of center political site with my cartoons and articles: www.UncleSammySays.com

I tell you all this because If I can do this, anyone can. Good luck.
Reply:The most useful i find are Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia's Dreamweaver. Each have their own advantages.

I want to get a career in Web Design but I don't want to do freelance. Is there another option?
Most designers do freelance because it's easier for them - they just like the freedom.

Plenty of companies need webdesigners. But usually, they are creative designers.

In a company, you need to have more specialized skills. If you worked in a web design company, you would need to either be a creative designer or a web developer who knows PHP, ASP, .Net, etc. CSS and HTML is a given. The designer is the one who creates the graphics, images, background, etc.

You need to determine which is your better skill - creative or programming. And make sure you excel in one or the other. That;s how you can get a job in a company.

Freelancers can afford to be OK with creative and development because they are working for themselves.

You can find jobs pretty much anywhere. Lots of designers get jobs jumping from one contract job to another through an employment agency. You are technically working for the agency, not yourself.

You can find a job in a design agency, interactive marketing agency, or development firm. Some IT firms integrate web design/development. Some individual companies employ their own in house designer/developer. Examples include big real estate brokerages, software development firms, financial companies, or online retailers.

You gotta look, but the opportunities are there.
Reply:Look in the NY Times or LA Times Sunday want ads. Or learn programming, get a job as a programmer and hope the company asks you to "just take a look" at their web site.

When everyone with a $200 computer claims to be a web designer, no one is hiring web designers.

I would like to do Web Design as a home business? What language do I need to learn?

What are all the languages or programsthat I need to learn to start making websites for local businesses.

I would like to do Web Design as a home business? What language do I need to learn?
That's a tricky question. Normally people would answer HTML or CSS, but before you can even think of building a website (I know where you are coming from). Who do you want to build websites for? Do you cater to SMB (Small-Medium Businesses) or are your goals outsrtetched towards Large Scale? Once you have decided who your target clients are (there is a such a thing) you will have a feel of the kinds of demands needed for each particular client.

Before you learn any web language research your target market(s) and clients. Then research the kinds of sites from industries that you want to work for or represent. Don't just look at the sites and comment on how "pretty" it looks. Disect the site's elements: Why did the webmaster decide (out of 45 other web layouts) that the current one is best? How does this site communicate to the target audience? What is it about this site that makes it so appealing and why?

Once you have finished your background (very important) research, from there you should be able to get a basic understanding of the kind of languages (not to mention web authoring programs) to use.

Example: One of your clients distributes computer hardware up and down the East Coast. She wants to expand her clientel to the MidWest towards California. You do not have to worry about business expansions, but you will have to concern yourself with SQL and ASP to manage the flow of an evergrowing database.

Last Example: You finally landed an account with MTV (lucky stiff). MTV's main bread and butter are teens (eventhough their target audience is like teens to young adults). You will have to figure a site to cater to teens. You will definitely need HTML, CSS and Flash (animation program, but a must nonetheless) to start.

I hope this gives you some insight on where to go from there. You must above all know your target industry before you figure out what languages and programs to learn. Though the above examples are for a slightly larger crowd the same approach works for all.
Reply:for websites u just need to know html code, and you can just copy and paste a lot of that.
Reply:You can learn HTML for free at http://www.w3schools.com/

After you learn HTML you need to know CSS and learn PHP, Perl, Java and ASP.

So I'm going freelance, been designing for about 3 years. How much would you be prepared to pay for a decent looking website?

How much should I charge for a decent web design service?
I think web designers charge too much. For a complete website I would say, depending on your resume, $150-200 USD with at least 6 months support. But if you are just starting out you should probably charge a little less at first. Unless you are doing something for a big company.. lol

Reply:I will use the famous car dealership comparison: What answer would you expect walking into a car dealership and asking "How much is a car?" Depends on model, features, etc, right? A good looking site can be 1 page, 100 pages, flash based, xhtml based etc. Does it include database access? Content management? With my company I typically charge about $60/hr and use that rate along with how much time I think it will take to create the project and provide a quote based off of the result. Also, make sure you are aware of any overhead such as the licensing cost of third party scripts that may be used. Every project is different. After you have taken on a few projects you will get a feel of how much you need to charge to make it worth your while. The cheapest site I have done was for $750. This most expensive was $15,000.

Good luck in your freelancing endeavors!!

I have little web design skill. What is the best place to buy an existing website to build a web business?

I want to buy a preexisting website and enhance it and market it. I just need a good location to find a buy something like this.

I have little web design skill. What is the best place to buy an existing website to build a web business?
Webstarts.com is your answer. It's free to sign up and their online editor uses simple drag and drop functionality so you need zero web experience to build completely custom websites. They also have image search and video search tools, so dropping videos, images, text and even music takes 1 or 2 clicks at most. Check them out here: http://Webstarts.com

You can also register a domain or configure it to work with your existing domain. They make it really simple and provide everything: hosting, domain registration, tons of templates to choose from, images, videos, etc... I've never found anything out there quite like it. It's pretty powerful, and at the same time super easy to use.

You need to do more research on what you want the website to do. What are you selling? Is a big high cost website the best option? If you don't need a database then teach your self a bit more HTML then get some free server space. Then take it from there.

Hope this helps a little.
Reply:What is your budget? A good website earns anything between $200-$100000 per month , you need to shelve at least $2500.(12 months earning) Better buy a domain and start a website yourself.
Reply:Not sure what you're asking. Are you asking about where to find a template?

A web site template is a pre-made layout that you can put your own info into. But that's just a start. You still need to know how to build the site and what you're selling.

If you can be more specific or give an example, I'm sure you'd get better answers.

Depends on who you go through.

You can get a website will that will cost you around $80/year and possibly $300-$500 for setup.

If you want a break down of costs and no more about the details, then feel free to email me (irishtek@yahoo.com) and I'll explain the gory process to you.
Reply:It depends on number of pages that you want , it costs anything between $5-$25/page.

thank you!

What do i need to start a Web Design bussniess?
First make sure you know your stuff.

After that get a business strategy put together.

Get employees that will be working for you

Plan an advertising campaign (this is the biggest part)

you need to get the word out about your business.

Get a web site that works well for your clients and keep stats.

Record where you customers are coming from so you can pour more money into those areas for advertising and less in others what are not being fruitful.
Reply:hi, you need to be great at building websites and have the natural flare for design and how a user interprets a page. Also you need the business side to be able to keep prices competitive and complete projects on time. I am now a web designer with many happy customers. (my site is http://www.x5webdesign.co.uk
Reply:You need to be good at webdesign, both creating your own sites and building on other peoples work.

You'll also need a good business head, be able to estimate how long work will take and to be able to stick to it, to be able to deal with people to be able to create the site that they want, rather than the site you think they want. And if they don't know what they want (or what they want is a bad idea) you need to be able to explain it to them.

If you have everything else, you need to market yourself :)
Reply:Customers.
Reply:A scope of work, which defines what you will and will not do (such as maintenance etc), the purpose of the business, cost, and skill, such as PHP and MySQL
Reply:Learn to spell English
Reply:Start with your own web site, making sure it is completely professional, no gimmicks, clean cut, legible and definitely no spelling mistakes. Then get your stationery printed, cards, comp slips etc and design some leaflets and put them through doors and posters in shop windows. Mock up some samples of fictitious names to add to your web site so people can see what your design skills are like. Ask other web site owners if they can put your link on their sites and also local Chamber of Commerce. Go to your bank, open a business account and complete a Business Plan, including Profit and Loss Statement, Cashflow forecast etc and if you have no business acumen at all enrol on a business course at your local enterprise centre.
Reply:sounds like you wanna be freelance.

Well 1st be sure you know how to design and use softwares like dreamweaver, flash, photoshop, illustrator and other adobe products. Then show off your skills to potential clients. Also it would help to have a server where you can upload your sites. do a search for myfatnetwork for that. these are just a few things i can think of. The answers above me are also good.

I'm thinking of starting my own web design business out of my home...What do I need to do to start?

I'm mainly concerned with legal/government-related issues I need to address in order to get started to be recognized as a legitimate business, but any helpful tips would be appreciated! Thanks ahead of time.

I'm thinking of starting my own web design business out of my home...What do I need to do to start?
1) Go to the County Clerk's office and do the appropriate paperwork. Unless you want to spend at least $400 incorporating, you will need a business license and a fictitious name. They will help you with this.

2) Get a computer.

3) Get clients.

4) ???

5) Profit!
Reply:Check out my blog. Although it is about photography, you might find that some of my ideas will be helpful for you business.

You can find it linked on my profile.

Good luck!!!
Reply:Visit Yahoo Groups under Business %26amp; Finance /Home Business for ideas
Reply:All you need to do once you have decided on what to name the business is to go to the Department of Revenue in your area or do it online. They willl help you with the paperwork and even the decision about sole prioritor, LLC etc. You pay the fees (anywhere from $35.to several hundred) and you are licensed! If you walk in, you get it instantly, if you fill out the paper online it takes about 4-6 weeks to get it. If walking in, print of the form online and take it in. Some states require a city license too, but they will take care of it at the Dept. of Revenue at the same time. Every year there is a small fee around $45.+ to renew. Have fun with the business and good luck.

What kind of computer would you get to start a web design business?

I want to desgin multiple websites not just my own. I hate MACs so please don't suggest one. PLEASE BE SPECIFIC.

What kind of computer would you get to start a web design business?
If you are truely serious about being a web designer, it is actually better to have multiple PCs of different levels with different operating systems. The actual processor speed and type of computer is not as important as other factors.

1. Internet connection - This is the backbone of your business, since you will be uploading web pages and graphics to a server, and some things will need to be tested online. Go for verizon fiber optic if it is available in your area. DSL or Cable internet is secondary.

2. Have different PCs, Operating systems, Web Browsers, etc... so that you can test your webpages under different circumstances. Your webpage may appear different on a Computer running Windows 98 %26amp; Mozilla, than it does on a machine running Windows XP and Internet Explorer, or a machine running Linux and Netscape. Since the computers do not need to be new, you can usually get away with using old used PCs that people are trying to give away because they are updating their machines (example-I have a newer machine that runs Windows XP and an old AMD-K6-2 300 MHZ that runs a dual boot of Windows 98 and Linux that I use just for testing). Web pages will also look different depending on your screen resolutions (so change them and see how it looks when testing a site 800x600 looks a lot different from 1024x800).

3. Items to consider when buying a new PC: (a.)No matter what you do, the biggest bottleneck to performance will almost always be internet speed. (b.)If you are planning to do a lot with graphics (maybee some video), the best upgrade that you can do is to buy more memory (RAM). (c.)If you are planning on taking your new computer with you at any time to show things to clients, then you probably want a LAPTOP (If you get a laptop, stay away from the low end intel processors - Celeron's -instead go with an AMD processor or an Intel Pentium dual Core processor). (d.) Always get a CD/DVD burner as this is useful for backing up files, creating presentations, and having a portable copy of your work to give potential clients.

If looking for under $600.00:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...

Here is another model with another GB of RAM for under $700:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...
Reply:To be honest any pc will do. I managed to make quite a few pro sites (hard coded in php) on the most sluggish of pc's

windows xp on 64mb ram... beat that!

I'd say pick a pc which has alot of ram. When you have multiple windows open and are doing lots of things like editing, uploading, downloading, speaking with mates over IM it can get rather crazy.

So... personally.. typical low price pc something like..

AMD

Win XP (not vista)

2.0 Ghz + or over (processor)

1 GB RAM minimum
Reply:then get a PC.

Any would do. models from HP, Dell, Compaq, Sony, etc.. they're all the same if you just use it purely in web designing. Maybe you can revise your question on what specs should they have. An $800 to $1K PC would do if it would fit your budget.
Reply:If you're going to start a web design business here's a few things you should have in mind.

1. Developing a simple backup solution

-- This could simply be creating a process or habit of burning anything you're worked on for your company or your clients to optical disks and keeping them in organized storage

2. How many employees do you have?

-- If it's just you then this is ok. However, as you may start to grow you may want think about investing in employees or you company; purchasing computer models that are around longer or purchasing / renting computers and / or servers.

3. Computer Power

If you plan on designing using 3D models before rendering to a 2D picture you may want to consider purchashing a 3D graphics card to help boost performance

So what should your target PC be?

2.00 Ghz or higher Intel Core 2 Duo (1.63 Ghz or higher may suffice)

2 GB of RAM

CD Burner / DVD Burner

250 GB Hard Drive (Preferrable SATA: You may want to consider 2x250 GB this way if 1 hard drive fails you won't have to worry about busines downtime)

Any graphics card that supports OpenGL(There are alot of them out there. If you need a higher end model I would suggest an ATI Fire GL or higher / equivalent)

Which Is a better career Graphic design or Web Design?

I am going to start college and I was going to do graphic design but Im not much of a good drawer. does it mostly involve drawing?

I was also wondering which career makes more. I would like to hear from someone who is a graphic or web designer or knows someone who is.

THANKS :)

Which Is a better career Graphic design or Web Design?
Nearly all graphic design these days is done digitally. Same is true of web.

Web design **really does** require a knowledge of the technical restrictions of web development. In my line of work we often get crap from print designers who think their work is golden because it's an "online brochure." "Don't trouble me with the details, I'm the designer, you work out the technical stuff." The end result is you get a web site that other web developer scoff at because it so abhorrently goes against the principles of good web development.

So to be a really **good** web designer, you need to understand both, how print media is different than web media.

To answer the question, unless you're lucky enough to get a foot in a huge agency, as a graphic designer you'll wind up doing a lot of production work with very little reward. In the print industry, the work is consistent; in advertising, it's brutal and volatile - you may be the company big dog one day and out of a job the next.

Web design is a little more fluid, but the same thing applies: unless you get a foot in a big agency, you'll be doing a lot of designs for someone else for nowhere near as much as you'd expect. However, I will say this: web development will show a much longer lifespan than graphic design in print. I feel like GD's days, at least in print media, are numbered.
Reply:These are both great careers i'm studying to be a Graphic Designer so far the it's really not that hard. i wouldn't worry about the hand drawing stuff thus far there's always a way to make it look like you know what you're doing. I think web designers make a little more money than graphic designers.
Reply:GD can include both software and hand drawing. You'll get good at hand drawing with practice. I'm not in it, but I've taken some classes.
Reply:graphic design can fall in the same genre as a web designer too. but you can do both
Reply:I would have to say graphic design has much more job security then web design, because it can cross over into so many other areas of I.T.

Brief: It’s for designers, developers, site owners and managers who seek to end the costly spiral of obsolescence, where each new browser or Internet device means a whole new coding cycle and another line item on the budget
Reply:Adobe software is common, so for that I'd go to your local discount bookstore, and try to find books that are a little older, CS2 isn't that different from CS1, adobe also has a "classroom in a book" series that's quite good (except the dreamweaver book, which got terrible reviews).

I also have a design book called "Don't Make me think" ISBN 0321344758 it's humorous and probably very helpful. You'd also probably be well off to get a book on typography.

I want to start my own web design business, what should I do?

I already have four people who'd want to start with me as a joint partnership. I have two graphics guys, me (a coder), and my friend Chris (also a coder). What else do I need, and who else do I need to get this going, and what would be my first step?

I want to start my own web design business, what should I do?
Since I presume you've never been in business before, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. You have to determine whether you'll start a totally web based business or one with a store front. I'd call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.

The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a web design business and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you'll concentrate on (your market ) and how you'll go after them.

You'll need to register the business with your state controller's office and make sure that you have any city and county licenses if any are needed where you live. All of this will come out in a business plan. You also need to write a partnership agreement outlining how the company will be owned and how you'll break up the partnership if someone wants to get out.

Try this link :

Good Luck
Reply:There are several ways to approach your desired results. However, the first thing is to reduce everything to a business plan. this will allow you to see your idea in writing and grow your concept into a money making venture. there are some excellent resources for business plans visit SBA.gov or www.aisb.biz. e-commerce is fairly simple and low cost if you have talent and imagination. I would post samples of my web pages for free and promote templates with the understanding that the use of the web page has to give credit yo your company. But by writing a plan you will discover these type of opportunities
Reply:Everybody and his brother is going to be your competitor. What will you guys have that is unique to give you a competitive advantage over the thousands of businessess out there? Remember, that cut rate shops using high school kids can produce great looking sites for small businesses nowadays for minimum wage. Find your special attraction......work out the realistic overhead expenses..... put together a business plan...... line up 2 or 3 initial customers...... if you can't get all that done, you're going to fail. If you can... you've got a chance.
Reply:First of all, don't worry about the responders who told you you'll have more competition than you can shake a stick at. Of course you will. Every type of business in the world does - so what? It didn't stop Google from starting the umpeenth search engine or Richard Branson from starting the umteenth airline. Competition is a beautiful thing and you're going to take them on, right? Right!

I have helped many people start businesses and I aways recommend drafting a ONE PAGE (no more) business plan to analyze your future business: its resources (people, technology, etc.), needs and feasibility, easily and objectively. Someone above me mentioned this and they're absolutely right. The business plan isn't going to investors or anyone else yet - it's just for you and your partners to better understand where you are and what you need.

You, my friend, are going to answer your own question (because only you can), by answer THESE questions in your business plan:

1. What NEED does your business fulfill? (i.e. Google helps people search the Internet more effectively than perhaps any other search engine. Apple Computers gives consumers personal computing technologies that are user friendly and beautifully designed.) Your answer ISN'T just "web design." What KIND of web design? Is it for corporations or small companies or personal sites? Is it cutting edge or classic design? KNOW YOUR NICHE. In a world of a million web designers, why will your customers come to YOU?

2. What's your REVENUE STREAM? In other words, how are you going to make money? Don't say "sell people websites." Are you selling them as a package deal? As a "Chinese Menu" (pick and choose features of the website)? What's the pricing plan? What are the exact services and features you offer, and if you don't have the skills to meet all your customers' needs, are you going to outsource the rest or are going to limit the features you offer? Get down the brass tacks. Look at how other successful webdesign firms price their sites. Many of the prestigious ones won't have their pricing online. So do your homework: call them up and ask for a quote as though you're buying their services. It's not cheating - it's DUE DILIGENCE. Believe me, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and the Google boys have done it.

3. What do you have that gives your business a COMPETITIVE EDGE? (Unique technology? Original application of a tested idea?) This is a continuation of question #1 but, again, down to the brass tacks. Look up the design firms that are closest to who you want to be and now DIFFERENTIATE your services from theirs. What are you going to have that they don't. Why are you BETTER than they are?

4. Who is the MANAGEMENT team? (CEO? Operations? Technology? Marketing?) You've got a team of four, you say. Are roles and responsibilities clear? Is there a leadership chain and a good decision-making process established? Otherwise, the team may fall apart at the first difference of opinion. Make sure you're on the same page on this. Also, you have the technology staff, but even a technology company has needs beyond technology. You need people responsible for marketing, finances and other aspects of the business. You don't necessarily need MORE people, but you do need to know who of you 4 will be responsible for those aspects of the business.

5. What STAGE are you at now in the business? (Just have the idea? Have you developed the website and whatever technology you need? Do you need some investment to get started?)

6. What do you need for the business to be SUCCESSFUL? (Research? Techology? More employees?) Don't say "money" - of course you need and want money - but what do you need the money FOR in order to make the business successful? Very often you can get the things you need without money upfront if you're creative. Don't say "Customers" - obviously you need customers. There's a reason you don't have them yet. WHY DON'T YOU have them yet? The answer to that question often is "marketing" for example. So now you know that you need a marketing plan.

Look into some books on entrepreneurship and small businesses. If you want a refreshing and unusual role model as an entrepreneur, pick up Richard Branson's autobiography, "Virgin" (he's the CEO of Virgin, the Megastore, Airline, Cellphone company and many more). Or look up how the top web design firms got started. Or more generically, look up how Yahoo! and Amazon and eBay and other successful online businesses got started. You might be surprised at how they started with just one person (or two or four people) with an idea.

This seems like a lot of information for one page. Go ahead and brainstorm on as many pages as you need, but at the end of the day, you should be able to crystalize these answers onto a SINGLE page. When you can do that, it means that the answers are CLEAR AND KNOWN to you. And THEN you are ready to start your business.

Good luck and have fun with it!

How to produce professional quotation of web design with branding strategies project for my client?

I need to produce the impressive quotation so that my client is confident in me and they know it's worth the money.

How to produce professional quotation of web design with branding strategies project for my client?
If you have your own web site, use design elements from it so there is obviously a connection.

Your personal stationery, starting with your logo, letterhead, envelope, business card etc must be the absolute best you can afford to produce. A quotation and invoice are no different. They are all part of your client-touching communications package.

Keep the design clean, simple and easy to read. Is this something you will be mailing or presenting in person? You might consider a brief laptop presentation of the quotation.

If you want to impress him, do it with content. Show that you understand the importance of setting goals for the site, identifying target audience(s) developing a detailed site map, building wireframes for major sections...and testing, testing, testing of navigation. This is Phase I.

Phase II is paper comps of basic design styles. Allow steps for at least two sets of revisions.

Phase III is actually creating the code.

You can break your fees up into three parts too, so you have some cash flow and he can pay as he goes.

If you need more help, email me.

Good luck.

What is the best order in which to take web design classes?

I want to take dreamweaver, flash, photoshop, and whatever else i can find. Is there a certain order I should take the courses in?

What is the best order in which to take web design classes?
When I started out, this was a few years before adobe acquired macromedia (dreamweaver, flash...), I first took an intro to web design class. In that class, we didn't learn much programming language (HTML) but we did learn some dreamweaver, we learned web design trends and techniques, and other introductory stuff about the internet web design, and basics of development of websites. I actually learned photoshop, illustrator and fireworks long before I started learning dreamweaver, I'd recommend you do it that way because you can make websites using photoshop and imageready (a program that comes with photoshop) without knowing dreamweaver or programming language, but it does limit your abilities to create certain cool things. I then learned dreamweaver.

These days, I can create and entire web site prototype in photoshop meaning the look of the overall website is established, but the links, animations, rollovers, buttons or anything don't work yet, and to put it in simple terms, once the overall look is done, photoshop, with the use of its exact sister program called image ready, can export that photoshop file as HTML. I then open it into dreamweaver, and that is where I activate links, import flash animations, activate cool rollovers, create a template for the header and footer and make the other pages that go on the website.

Its actually VERY easy. So here are your steps for classes:

1. Intro to Web design or intro to graphic design (you'll be exposed some of the programs like photoshop, illustrator, maybe even dreamweaver.

2. Intro to Dreamweaver - you'll learn dreamweaver, it builds the HTML for you.

3. Any other programs you need - more photoshop, more illustrator... you'll learn how to create your own unique graphics for print AND web, but most importantly you can make CUTTING EDGE graphics and use them to import into dreamweaver or adobe go live.

4. and lastly, take flash... its considered a modifier in web design because you can still create GREAT designs without it, but the more expensive websites have them.
Reply:i'm doing multimedia and we do flash, htlm, photoshop, illustrator, in design, maya, premier, and after effects. i would recommend you start of with a strong knowledge of photoshop, move on to dreamweave and then to flash, thats if you wanna do it in steps. We just go all out and do them all.

hope this help..good luck
Reply:I would start with dreamweaver then photoshop then flash. You need to know how to use dreamweaver to use the other stuff. You will need photoshop for photo editing basic stuff before you can get advanced with flash.
Reply:Take the programming language courses... DW is only an extension, a WYSIWYG.

XHTML(HTML)/CSS

Photoshop

Flash

PHP/MySQL

That should be enough to keep you busy for quite some time.

Do you have any ideas for a simple, affordable way to advertise my web design company?

I have bery little money to spend on advertising, and I can't think of any effective way to do it. Obviously I could register it with search engines, but that costs some amount of money a month. The only idea I have so far is flyers, but I doubt that will have an luck in getting clients. Other than that I can go around to small businesses and give them a page of information and pray that they might be interested....I don't know I am kind of desperate for ideas/help......

Do you have any ideas for a simple, affordable way to advertise my web design company?
First, anytime you want to advertise anything always check your spelling, "bery little money" haha. Seriously, do you have your own website? If not why not? They are very affordable now and are fantastic for promoting almost anything. Price for service under $50.00 start up and maintenance for about $12.00 per month. Check out Yahoo Small Business. Also if you are serious about web design try getting yourself listed in local trade magazines or a small newspaper ad in the want ads section. The best is always an actual site though. In your heading area be certain to leave your contact information complete, some search engines say to limit it to 75 characters but it is not so major an issue you cant "advertise" there. Also you mentioned cost for search engines, most engines do have free submission areas as well. They are not guranteed inclusions but if you have a very well structured site you almost always get inclusion it just takes a few months. But if nothing else you get listed in their directories, which is always a start. Hope this helps.

How long does it take to build a web design business?

I want to take some classes to learn about the programming. I dont have a degree and need to change careers rather fast. I would start doing it on the side until I can build up and have my own business. Once I have taken the necessary classes, how long does it take to build a business if you hustle?

How long does it take to build a web design business?
That depends on two things: if you have the stuff to run a business (including business sense and design skills), and how hard you are willing to work (getting clients, making websites).

Reply:My advise to you is to team up with a graphic designer to make visual appealing looking sites, so that all you have to worry about is the programming part, also make sure you hand code all your work, is way better(but slower) than using generated code like the one that Dreamweaver writtes for you.It will make you less "application-dependent".

Learn quickly from your mistakes, and ask questions in forurms and also ask to any experienced programmer that you may know.

As you can see no one can give you and exact or approximate time for you to build a bussiness site, I´ve been developing websites for 5 years and some time takes me weeks to finish a project..

What is the best web design program that professional webddesigners use?

I have seen dreamweaver mentioned a lot, is this the one to go with?

I do not want software that will make a website look like it is hosted on a free server.

Thanks!

What is the best web design program that professional webddesigners use?
In most web design "circles" that I've experienced, if you mention that you're using Front Page, you could expect to see a lot of nostrils as people look down their nose at you. Seriously, Dreamweaver is still the rampant head of the pack... UNLESS we're talking about programming and designing web applications, then we're talking about (in order of personal preference)...

ActiveState Komodo

NetBeans

Eclipse

Zend Studio

The middle two are both open-source products. NetBeans is primarily Java, but Eclipse has plug-ins for just about everything but the kitchen sink.

Komodo and Zend Studio both have downloadable trial versions. The advantage of these is live debugging of applications. ZD is primarily for the PHP platform. Komodo works well with any number of languages. I've primarily used it for Python, PHP, XML and Ruby.

Finally another plus in favor of Dreamweaver is that when you want to start designing graphics (Fireworks) and Flash, the suite is designed to integrate seamlessly.
Reply:Most of the ones down here use FrontPage. I used to hear Dreamweaver a lot, but not in the last couple years.

Yes, there are many web design businesses; but I think it is worth starting up a web design company. After all, I have started one recently on my own too. To me, the key to starting a successful business is marketing. There are always people out there with web design needs but don't know where to go to for help. If you can find out how you can market to those people and offer reasonable prices, you are all set.

And also, just for safety net, instead of just doing web design, you can provide other web related products/services too.

How do I start my own online web design business?

When I know nothing about how to do it or what is involved. How can I learn and is this a competitive industry and will I make money. How could I be successful with it?

How do I start my own online web design business?
Hi A person,

Nice day to you.

I'll divide my answers into few section. Wish this answers can give you some reveals how to start your own online business and bring you to success.

Answer 1

Do you have any ideas in what kind of products or services you are going to sell for your online business?

My suggestion is, find somethings you are really interesting with it and you can pay fully passion with it. Otherwise you will give up very very soon. Many successful internet millionaires start their online business with their own interest.

Example

-Sport website - they love football, NBA, Formula One, etc.

-Travelling hot spots website - they love travelling.

-Food recipe website - they love cooking.

-Entertainment website - they love music, movies, idols.

-Pets website - they love animals.

-Loves website - they are experts in dating.

and many more.

Start today, think what you are really interesting in?

Answer 2

Make sure the products or services you are going to sell with an existing huge market. Do the market research before you start your business. A business won't make money even he has a perfect product or service but there are no market require for that product or service.

There are many low cost online softwares can help you to determine whether your business with an existing hungry market or not.

Answer 3

Create a website. There are many online experts can help you to build up a business website just within 1-2 weeks time. You no need to know anything about web design or programming.

Just let them know what kind of business you wish to start up, they will help you to create all the business features and tools on your website and make it looks professional.

Answer 4

Now you have a best product to sell but your business still can not earn money if you don't have a good marketing strategy. Takes a look at McDonald. McDonald is not selling the best burger in the world, but he own the most franchises all around the world. His successful secret is applying an excellent strategy into his business but not selling the best burger in the world.Get the online supporting team to consult your business step by step to success.

Wish this opinions can help you.

Wishing you success.

p.s : I have to make my explanation in short summarize here. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. If you be willing, you can read my real story and experience in how do I start my own internet home business and use it to earn money for me. Feel free to email me a blank mail with the subject "Real Story". I will share the story with you. chriswwy789@yahoo.com

Chris.

I have invested in quite a few softwares (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, etc) and while I am teaching myself, I would like to take a few classes to improve my skills. I have a full time job, and already have a college degree. I don't want to start a program at a school, but I would like to learn more on graphic design and how to best use these applications.

Looking for affordable good quality web design?

I am looking for some good quality web design for my production company. I'm interested in something with a little bit of flash, and a pretty simple to navigate music based website to house my beats and instrumentals. I would like for my clients to be able to:

View the Most Recent Beat somewhere along the home page (Exclusive Beat of the day)

I'm of course open to all types of suggestions. I've seen some pages for other production companies and haven't really seen too many professional looking pages. I'm a firm believer in "your first impression is your last" therefore i would like something that would stick to a possibly client.

How can i motivate myself to finish putting together my web design portfolio so I can quit my frustrating job?

I would rather clean my house (toilets included) than to sit down and finish this thing, which I've been working on for months. Currently, I have a full time job at a grocery store doing a lot of physical work such as lifting so by the time I get home from work I have no energy to do much of anything. Any advice?

How can i motivate myself to finish putting together my web design portfolio so I can quit my frustrating job?
Is your portfolio a dream?

Dreams become reality only when they are put into action.

Maybe you could work on the dream before you go into work so you are not as tired as when you get home. You may think clearer without being tired.
Reply:I guess you want to work at the grocery store forever. That is why you are looking for excuses not to finish the portfolio. If you do want to get out, take a few days off of work as vacation. Tell them you haven't been feeling well and you need some rest. Take as long as you can and finish the portfolio. Unless, like I said, you want to stay at the grocery store forever.

In saying this, there are hundreds of businesses out there that are still meaning to get a website, but are too scared with the technology!

Unfortunately, steelghost1 is absolutely correct. You need to get some recommendations out there!

You're business needs to build a name for yourself, maybe, check up with your current customers.

Ask for feedback about:

Your services,

Your product (e.g. web design)

Your approach **

**Your approach is a courageous question, but an important.

If you're a very customer service person, maybe visit some of your local businesses with your laptop (I presume you have a laptop) and ask them if you can show them your web designs and suggest what you can do for them to improve their business via a website design such as yours. You might find you’ll only need to do this two or three times a week before you start build a name for yourself.

Remember if you’re to do this; practice, practice, practice your sales pitch, do be too pushy and dress nice… etc…

Try starting a competition and getting it listed in a competition website, but get a solicitor to sign off on your terms and conditions!

www.comping.com.au

www.lottos.com.au

Review where you have been posting your ads? Free services over the internet are great, but things are free for a reason.

Try the following websites:

www.truelocal.com.au

www.dlook.com.au

www.gumtree.com.au

www.cracker.com.au

www.aussieweb.com.au

www.digfoot.com

You may have to pay for some type of advertising in some form?

i.e flyers, radio, internet marketing(google adwords, yahoo marketing)

So maybe try a premium listing with these websites, or that other company with yellow in its words, which I would never recommend.

Back to recommendations, there are two Australian websites I know of that are free:

www.womow.com.au (pre-dominantly Melbourne)

www.raveabout.com.au (pre dominantly Sydney)

They work on your customers reviewing...

And also my very own website:

www.isuggest.com.au

Which is the world's only rating and ranking website, meaning your business will be ranked against your competitive business via customer reviews, but you customers can filter the reviews into five categories:

Overall Rating

Staff Friendliness

Staff Product Knowledge

Product/s Purchased

Time Efficiency

Our company also sends out a package containing products to help your customers review your business via, SMS, Postal and online. It's only free advertising till the 8th Mar 08. With a promotion of "subscribe of one year and recieve an extra year for free, for the first two hundred businesses".

We advertise your business via direct mail-outs, online search engines, charity events and media (i.e radio)

For more information, visit my site. Sorry I could ramble about it all day/night!

I hope that has given you a few ideas and good luck v.e.n.d.e.t.t.a's

Reply:Here are some free web marketing tips.

Not all web marketing needs to cost money. Aside from website submissions, there are a number of things that web marketers can do that are free, though they may be rather time-consuming. Other marketing tactics are relatively inexpensive, and are often well worth the investment.

Follow these basic steps to market your website and business.

Free Web Marketing Tips

Reply:Assuming that you have an active website, consider placement of various critical SEO [Search Engine Optimization] metatags that can

surely achieve a high search engine presence and

increase Internet traffic to your website. These

metatag strategies work well with published websites

at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based

website, make sure to fill-in the property entries

such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing

to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can

be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the

Internet audience and their incoming setup. For

example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages

take too long to load up and therefore analog users

will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the

Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL

lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So

before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple

question, "Who's my end user - is he on dialup or

DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users

for maximum marketability, then select analog users

since 80% of most resident users are still analog

Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages

is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,

is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit

the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a

graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots

are unable to properly classify textual material.

Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google

and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which

should consist of no more than 65 characters separated

by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic

terms, the goods and services, followed by a location

from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.

The placement of a domain name which is not generic

within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your

domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is

usually 41 words to form a complete sentence which

best describes one's goods and services.

And the very last category - "Keywords" are also

somewhat limited to 15 words which can be plural

and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries

which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which

is defined as the loading, and submission of

repetitive words into a particular metatag category.

"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported

to Google's spamreport.com can result in the

elimination of your website from their search

directory.

Good luck!

How do you write a web design RFP?

I'm writing an RFP for a website redesign and I need some language saying that we're looking for a new design direction. Any tips on how to word?

How do you write a web design RFP?
Specifically, looking for a new design direction, I would say something like "Desire to effect a new design direction." The best thing to do is elaborate on why the current design is failing and what should be improved - "The new look and feel should more accurately reflect the organizational desire to connect with females in the middle-to-upper-class income bracket."

How much to charge to web design a Ecommerce Site?

I know it's hard question answer and I know everyone says it depends.

Im a freelance web designer and I have built Commercial sites in the past but never a Ecommerce site before.

It is a small gift shop that wants a shopping cart and be able to accept credit cards. Should I give a flat fee for x amount of items to put on the site. Or should I charge per item.

They said there is around 100 - 200 items

I would have to:

-Take a photo of the item

-crop the picture

-upload the picture and put in on the site.

-create the add to shopping cart button for the item

How would I deal with upkeep with the site should I charge for a service contract for 6, 12 months?

How much should I charge for all this. Nothing crazy just html and the shopping cart.

How much to charge to web design a Ecommerce Site?
Use OSCommerce and you have a huge head start on the problem.

Also, ZenCart:

Reply:I can help you generate revenue form this account on a monthly basis through the credit card acceptance side of the service. We have partnered with many web designers and ecommerce providers to help them find revenue through the credit card processing volume from the merchant and shopping cart costs.

Reply:How do you normally charge? By the hour or by the job?

Let me tell you, I run a small web hosting company (www.cohenwebsvc.com, yes I'll shamelessly plug myself, and yes, my own website is no way near as good as my customers' sites) and it is these "little jobs" that are my biggest problem. For example, I have one customer (pays a flat fee for HOSTING) who always wants me to modify his site -- even after I built pages so that he can modify it himself (I can't dump him, he is both a friend and one of my first customers).

My worry is that you will not charge enough for all of the work you are going to have to do. Setting up the items and taking the pictures is going to take 10-30 minutes each -- and that assumes that the customer has all of the items ready for you to photograph. How long it takes to crop will be a function of how good you are with your toolset.

Suggestion? don't create a button for each item. Rather, use an off the shelf e-commerce product (there are several that are free) or use a database and php or perl to dynamically create the page and the button. This way, you create the pages once. You only have to add/remove records from your db as your customer adds/removes things.

For charging: I would have a fixed fee for the pages and database. Then a per-piece charge for the photos. Good luck

Reply:Web design is not just about coding or programming. I have met so many so called web designers that have NO design skills.

It's like hiring a magazine editor just because they know how to type. It does not make sense.

First, make sure you have the design skills to design aesthetically pleasing sites. Then, proceed with the programming skills.

The reason is that many small businesses (your market I assume since large companies already have a website or marketing dept.) don't need anything special that might require too much programming.

I am not trying to be critical, but you need to make sure this is something you want and can do before you waste your time with learning new things.

I wish you luck and hope you truely succeed.

FWIW, I use Coldfusion for programming sites that need dynamic interaction. However, I use straight HTML quite often. For jobs I do not have time to do, I use elance and get bids on jobs.

What is the best way to advertise a web design agency?

I have been in business for more than 10 years now and I need to grow my customer portfolio. I was thinking to do some magazine advertisement in specific nitches like aviation, medicine and construction. Business opportunity magazines might be another good shot. Does anybody have a similar experience, and where do you think I should advertise? How about online...yes but where? Any statistics or case study? Thanx a lot!

What is the best way to advertise a web design agency?
ummmm...on the web!
Reply:I am concern that a web design agency doesn't know what vehicle to use to advertise. I would want a web design agency to know how to create eye catching displays and how to put me out there.

What is the best web design school in the Chicago-land area?

Looking for a school but some I've heard of promise you things and don't fufill those promises, i just want a legit school that I can get a good education and earn a degree/certificate in 2 years or less.

What is the best web design school in the Chicago-land area?
I don't know for sure. However, i think that you can get a really good foundation at a Community College. (if you don't know too much about web design). The rest of your learning, especially Web design will come with the effort you are willing to read books, experiment, take on pro-bono jobs, and on the job experience.

Hope this helps.

I want to start a home based web design business but I am renting a home can I do this?

What are the tax implications for myself and the homeowner?

I want to start a home based web design business but I am renting a home can I do this?
You most certainly can start a business. You will pay taxes as a self employed individual, which means no taxes will be taken out on a W2 form. But you will pay on what your business earns. Weather you rent or not, has no bearing on your tax situation, except for the fact that you cannot write off the houses expenses such as electric, phone, utilities, etc. because you are not paying them.

Other than that you should feel free to start a home based business... and best of luck to you!!!

As far as I know there are no tax implications for the home owner.
Reply:according to h %26amp; r Block, to claim your home business and get credits on your taxes, etc, your home office must be in a room all it's own and that room must not be used for anything else. There should be no tax implications for your landlord. You should be able to do just fine. If you have any questions, you can always go to the irs web site and search through their many documents for your answers. Another thing, if you plan to have an accountant and attorney (on an as needed basis), you can always ask them. Hope I made sense, lol.

What does IT desktop support do? Is it less work than web design?

what does IT desktop support do? Is it less work than web design?

What is their typical role within a corporation? What type of corporations hire these professionals?

What does IT desktop support do? Is it less work than web design?
Neither one is "less work" - both deal with customers - the people you're supporting, or the people deciding on what should go on the web site.

Desktop support includes fixing computer problems, helping people with applications like Word and Excel and, sometimes it includes some network support (like familiarity with Exchange server, VLans, etc.)

All sorts of companies hire support people these days - the company I work for has about 50 computers and 3 tech support people (in house - and a consulting company for "heavy lifting"). The company my wife works for has a network with about 50 servers and over 1,000 computers. Their tech support department has about 25 people in it, ranging from network people to teachers who teach new hires how to use MS Office the way the company needs it to be used.

Web design also ranges all over the place. You don't want to be near my office when someone has promised a customer that a new function will go live on the web tomorrow, and I haven't even gotten the spec for the function yet. (I do some of my best work after 3 days of working at home with no time to blink, let alone glance toward the bedroom.)

If you're looking for easy work, don't look at a computer-related job. :)
Reply:I was going to take a job doing this before I got my current job. I'm not sure if your job would be the same as the one I was offered, but I was basically the person who would answer the phone and answer any problems people would be having with their computers/programs, etc. I would then walk to their offices or wherever they were located and try to fix the problems for them. This job was for a hospital. But I know that schools and other corporations need an IT person as well.
Reply:Desktop support deal with PC -related problems over the phone or in person.

They help users with PC issues, as opposed to server or network-infrastructure problems.

They'll help users with errors, hardware failure, network connectivity, printing, applications that are running on their work PC, and will visit the PC in person to fix the problem.

Often, they use remote-control tools like VNC to fix problems by taking control of the user's PC.

Also, they 'log' problems that are reported to them to keep track of the kinds of problems that are happening.

Corporations of all sizes and in all areas of business typically rely on PCs, so they'll have some kind of desktop support. Some desktop support staff are on the company payroll, and some will work for an outsourced IT company.
