What are the basic techniques for Web design?

a. What languages are required to design a static web page? Is knowing HTML and Javascript sufficient?

b. What additional graphic software or languages is required to be able to design a dynamic web page?

Appreciate any expert advice and recommended websites.

What are the basic techniques for Web design?
Learning HTML is sufficient, but basic. I would also learn CSS as well. Tutorials can be found at www.w3schools.com

If you want to design graphics for the site, I strongly recommend getting Fireworks and/or Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

Fireworks is an Adobe program you design your site by creating the graphics, buttons, basic layout, etc. Then you import the file into Dreamweaver, which basically puts all the code together and makes it a working HTML site. From there you can modify it any which way you want. However, I would first familiarize myself with HTML using Notepad. HTML is easy and its a must for any serious web developer.

As far as creating a dynamic site, go with PHP and MySQL. They're both outstanding programming languages for small to medium websites because:

1. They're free

2. You can find excellent, cheap hosting that supports both

3. Its fairly easy

4. Very powerful

5. Theres TONS of online support for both

JavaScript is nice to know, but not a necessity, however, its worth learning.

After you've become familiar with the above, you'll be creating creative, attractive and dynamic sites in no time.
Reply:I have been referencing this website for years. It has lots of cheat sheets for HTML and others.

Reply:The most basic technique is the lost art of using Google. You go to http://www.google.com/ and type in the names of stuff you want to learn about (in your case "web design", "html", "graphics software" etc) and would you believe it - a whole load of recommended websites pop up before your very eyes!

Reply:HTML is the most basic tool u need to know, but in this day and age just using HTML is very rudimentary and primitive.

looks to me like the trend is in creating Flash or Shockwave websites..
