i was wondering if it would be profitable to do web design from home? or would i be better off trying to find a job with a company?
Is it profitable to do web design from home?
As long as you are good enough then it will defo be profitable.
However, starting of with a company may be better as you gain experience of how the industry works and also you could use the company as a reference when you go at it by yourself. People may be reluctant to hand over money to someone just advertising themselves online with no credentials.
Reply:If you are good at finding clients =)
A lot of serious clients will go with a well established firm rather than a freelancer. Unless of course you have an amazing portfolio.
Also you'll be paying 30% tax every year on your income, which is definitely higher than you would working for a company, unless you make tons of money =)
Reply:Freelance web design can be very profitable if you have the right equipment and can work with a variety of people.
Reply:You can register at freelance website like http://www.getafreelnacer.com/ and bid for all web designing projects posted there, initially bid as low as possible.
Reply:Web design is one of the few professions that is really well suited for home-based businesses. Since the finished product can be uploaded to the net from anywhere, doing the work at home is just as good a place as anywhere. Also, your potential client base is unlimited, since anyone anywhere might potentially want your services.
The major disadvantages to doing it that way are the same ones that exist for any go-it-alone contractor - you need to beat the bushes yourself for clients, do all the negotiations and other details that take time away from actually producing income-generating product, have all the additional headaches of tax filing and such associated with running a business and, most critical of all, have to deal with the occasion dry periods when projects are few and far between. Also, unless you've been in the business yourself for a while, working for someone else might be a wise move. If you're fresh out of school, life in the business world comes with a lot of issues probably not covered in an academic environment: dealing with clients and end-users, collecting and interpreting requirements and so on.
Spending a few years letting someone else handle the administrative headaches while you learn the ins-and-outs of the consulting world could be well worth it in the long run.
Reply:What an open ended question. If you are able to manage a business from home, and can successfully get paid to do web design for other people - yes, it will probably be profitable. What do you even mean by profitable? Worth your time? I would say that very little money goes into designing web sites, so time is the main thing that counts.
But aside from that, I would say that there are a good number of people that make good money from contracting out web design services, as well as working for companies.
