If not for free, a low price? What does it take to get a url out onto the web? Also, what happens once you get it? Where do you input information to be able to design it? Informative links much appreciated! Thank you!
How can I get a website that lets me completely dictate the URL (ex. no 'blogspot'), + the web design for free
Begin with setting up your own webpage as your current internet provider will provide free hosting as discussed below.
If you are currently a paid Internet subscriber, you are entitled to a "homepage" which often contains simple navigation and editing tools. And if you use the Netscape browser, the built-in Composer feature is a superior HTML authoring tool which is totally free. You can easily generate a full-blown website as a Homepage.
Nevertheless, the "homepage" URL is likely to be "http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscribe... name" and that URL can easily be overwritten via a redirection service, i.e., "mydomain.com" which allows you to link any registered domain name to "mask" another website. For example, should you type in the "domain name," you will be immediately transported to the homepage and the hompage URL of http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscriber... a homepage URL which will be masked by the domain name. And the charge for the redirection service [even at godaddy.com] is normally FREE.
When you acquire a domain name, connect it using a redirection service [as discussed above] and submit/publish the domain name on major search engines/directories in order for Net surfers to find your website.
Good luck!
Reply:You pay for domain names. you go to a registrar, enter the domain name you want, and if its available, you can register it (but not permanently).
10 bux for one yr is about right. You'll want hosting as well... which can get pretty pricey if you don't know where to look.
3ix is probably the best deal around if you're looking for something you can use for a blog.

It gets a little complicated after that... You'll probably want to learn HTML before you start spending any money... (If you only know %26lt;br%26gt; %26lt;img%26gt; and %26lt;a%26gt;, you better start reading up on some HTML)
That's pretty much everything you need for a basic website...
After you are fluent in HTML, you can teach yourself php which is used for most blogs and thing (but you don't necessarily NEED it to make a blog, but it helps a lot)

Reply:The URL can be anything from any service you choose. You need to get a registered domain name. Once the domain name is established, you simply "point" the domain name to the URL. Then when someone dials up your domain name it will go straight to the URL. There are several companies out there that provide these services in a package. You can go to http://www.toast.net where you will find several vendors listed. I use http://www.avahost.net they are good, but they are in the Ukraine, and therefore hard to get tech support. I am going to be moving to another service soon. My web site is located at http://www.theconsumersforum.com (for an example).
I would be glad to help further. drop me an email with your contact info.
Reply:Register a domain name yourself and pay for the space. Plenty of hosts out there, like 1on1, AOL, Yahoo, and just about every ISP out there.
Doteasy.net has free 100 MB hosting if you register domain with them.

Designing a website is whole other story. You can do it yourself, or hire someone else to do it.
Reply:Well.. *You* don't input the code..
You send the code to the host,
godaddy, 1on1, ect.,
and they put it onto the site.
Reply:I have one that is hosted on google for free and costs $10.00 a year through godaddy.com
