Hi all, I'm looking for advice and guidance for starting a home-based web-design business?
The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal %26amp; Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How to Really Start Your Own Business, Fourth Edition by David E. Gumpert

* How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan: Step-by-Step Guide by David E. Gumpert

* What No One Ever Tells You about Starting Your Own Business: Real-Life Start-Up Advice from 101 Successful Entrepreneurs (What No One Ever Tells You About Starting Your Own Business) by Jan Norman

* Business Start-Up Kit by Steven D. Strauss

* Start Your Own Business (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Up) by Rieva Lesonsky

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success %26amp; happiness in all your ventures!

Reply:I work with a company and they have a whole web-design program where you can design websites for small to medium sized businesses from home. Check out www.sage-designs.com for an example of the software. Let me know if you want more information!
Reply:Here is the truth about starting a business. Within five years 85 percent will fail. Within ten years, 95 percent will fail. Those are just statistics.

What you need to ask yourself is how much you are worth right now working for someone else in your capacity? Let's say it's 35 thousand. Are you going to make $35 PLUS to take into account all those extra expenses? The Manager at a MdDonald's earns 40 thousand. So if you don't at least hit that number deduct what you are earning from what you could have earned at McDonalds.

Then you know whether it makes sense.

Secondly, are you buying/creating a business or a job? Okay you are working on your own. But let's say you break your leg and revenue stops. You have a job. Yes you 'own it', but what you own is a job. A business runs whether the owner is working or not.

Third...let's say you have a real business. Now here...listen carefully. Learn about ratios. I know you are a graphics person and really don't understand math. Well then...stop. If you aren't willing/ready to learn the numbers you are already going to fail.

What are is your cost of sales? What is your cost of materials? Don't know? Don't do anything until you know. There are books and even mentors at the retired executives organization you can talk to.

"But I have an accountant". Good for you. You are on the ten yard line with seconds to go, and your accountant gives you a report about last year's game. Not much help to you right now.

Any idiot (and many are) can incorporate. The key is if you are going to own a business, you need to think it thru. Or go work at McDonald's or stay where you are.
