Can Web-Design be considered an art?

I have a portfolio to fill out in my art class, but the teacher told me that web-designing is not an art and would not let me do it unless I can convince her otherwise. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me convince this teacher and prove to her that web-design really is an art form? Thanks for your help!

Can Web-Design be considered an art?
Anything can be art if an artist presents it in an art context. A more interesting question is whether or not it's good art.

Art usually involves some design, so web art usually involves some web design. But that doesn't mean that art is usually nothing more than design.

Concepts are widely considered to be much more important than design. A website can have a strong concept just as well as any other artform, but few do.

If you present your web design as art, then you'll need to stand behind the work conceptually, which is to say you must be confident that the work has been rigorously developed to the tune of your specific concept, whatever it may be.

And if you want your teacher to accept your concepts, you'll need to make sure that they stand on their own in the context of Art History.

My advice is to begin by studying the ten-year history of web art (also search for net.art), and considering how your work fits into its lineage. Then go on and write your artist's statement. It's a great way to articulate your thoughts and motivations, while explaining to people (like your teacher) the concepts behind your work. Good luck.
Reply:Why would you want to be in an art class taught by such an idiot? Like the moron who gave the first answer to this question, your teacher is obviously confusing the tool (the web design software) with the creator. That's like telling a painter "No those portraits aren't really art, because you didn't do it - your brushes and paints did."

You are using your imagination and creativity, you are making design decisions, and you are combining elements to create something new. Duh!
Reply:check linkdup.com maybe you can find something there to convince her
Reply:i dont think it is really an art

web design is just really the computer generating color schemes, textures, patterns etc.

art is by YOU

not by a computer or the person behind the computer

but because technology today is making art easy, anybody can do it in less time

art takes patience, experience of fashioned equipment, and your mind

the computer just gives you generic styles that are boring
Reply:Your teacher is very traditionalist!

In my opinion, Web-desig is an art, since it involves so many creative processes and it is, after all, visually attractive.

I'd say that when humans take something useful and make it into something beautiful, then we have a piece of art (something that satisfy your aesthetic needs).

Besides, web-design is a part of our society as much as oils were a part of, let's say, 18 c. society, so, doesn't that says a lot about art? Art should reflect the way society changes and evolves.

Now, I haven't seen your web sites, but if you can combine functionality with beauty (and make a statement at the same time), then you should be allowed to include them in your portfolio.

Who knows? You might be the representative of a new generation of e-artists.

Tell your teacher that in the same way chair-design or coffee mugs design have achieved popularity, and are considered forms of art, web-design should be given an opportunity.

But remember, don't push too hard. Sometimes art teachers forget what is like to question tags.

Good luck!
Reply:I think that , everything could be "ART" with two thing : first, Knowledge.... second, creativity.
Reply:Web design is just 1 of many forms of art.

Dictionary.com defines art as: the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

Web design falls into that category just as well as sculpture, painting, woodwork/carving, etc.

Just because it is a computer generated medium does not negate it's creative or artistic qualities.

Refer to deviantart.com. You cannot tell me that the people that create those images are not artists. I've created images that took weeks to months to get it the way I want it. I created the images using the computer, not vice versa.
Reply:Web design is advertising - and advertising is most certainly an art form and has been for centuries. How does she think Norman Rockwell became famous? He painted magazine covers (that's an old-fashioned pre-internet webpage, in my opinion). Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven painters were nearly all advertising (graphic) designers.

Graphic Design and Advertising Design are diploma-earning art courses. Whew - sounds like I'm trying to convince my mother (again) that someone can make a living at art...
Reply:yes definetly it is all about creation of your own idea and putting on web
