How can I find a good web design firm (or person) to build me a great website, without spending a fortune? Thx

I am a sole proprieter looking to build a state of the art website, but not spend a fortune on a big agency. I've heard there are really good web design firms and people that can build these things in no time, and are excellent at what they do. Where do I find them? Thank you so much.

You need to look for developers at a low-cost locations (India, South America, Eastern Europe).
Reply:GURU.COM is a website that pairs businesses with design-firms. You post your project, and many designers will bid on it, and you choose the one you'd like to work with. I've used them in the past on both sides of the fence, hiring designers and bidding as a programmer, it's a good service.

Reply:Dave,

I think you should look into any one of the leading content management systems. These are free -- open source php scripts that allow you to deploy a dynamic and powerful website with a minimum of muss and fuss.

I'd recommend the following:

phpnuke.org

drupal.org

mamboserver.com

joomla.com

Being a sole proprieter, it's not unusual to want a "state of the art" web site, however, know exactly what your budget is, as most web design firms will ask, if their prices aren't posted.

Another thing is to have an idea of what you want. So many times clients just don't have a clue as to what they want. Find a few sites that you like the layout, etc. and find a few that you don't like...this will give your design firm an idea of what you're looking for and will speed along the process a bit.

Also, try and determine how many "pages" you will need to start off with. Do you need content, or will you be writing this yourself? Will you need professional copywriting services along with the design? Will you need a logo or a "branding" of your business? Will you be maintaining your website once it's completed?

These are just a few of the questions that most design firms will need to know in order to best provide you with a good estimate for a web site.

Good luck,
