I'm thinking of starting my own web design business out of my home...What do I need to do to start?

I'm mainly concerned with legal/government-related issues I need to address in order to get started to be recognized as a legitimate business, but any helpful tips would be appreciated! Thanks ahead of time.

1) Go to the County Clerk's office and do the appropriate paperwork. Unless you want to spend at least $400 incorporating, you will need a business license and a fictitious name. They will help you with this.

2) Get a computer.

3) Get clients.

4) ???

5) Profit!

Reply:All you need to do once you have decided on what to name the business is to go to the Department of Revenue in your area or do it online. They willl help you with the paperwork and even the decision about sole prioritor, LLC etc. You pay the fees (anywhere from $35.to several hundred) and you are licensed! If you walk in, you get it instantly, if you fill out the paper online it takes about 4-6 weeks to get it. If walking in, print of the form online and take it in. Some states require a city license too, but they will take care of it at the Dept. of Revenue at the same time. Every year there is a small fee around $45.+ to renew. Have fun with the business and good luck.
